Target: Ban Ki-Moon, United Nations Secretary-General
Goal: Praise UN for supporting global disarmament and stricter firearm regulations
The United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs is set to put the Arms Trade Treaty (or ATT) into effect on December 24th, 2014, severely limiting the international sale and trade of arms in an attempt to reduce global gun violence and human suffering. The treaty is a globally binding set of regulations and controls for the sale of arms that has the stated purpose of ending “the illicit trade in conventional arms,” while also establishing international standards for arms trading.
In the past, the international arms trade has been shrouded in secrecy and full of back room deals, but this treaty aims to promote transparency. The UNODA was established in 1952 with the express purpose of global disarmament. Their aims stretch from nuclear disarmament to creating strategies for reducing small arms violence within UN member states.
One of the most promising provisions of this treaty is an attempt to promote governmental transparency in the area of arms trade. This means that countries will no longer be allowed to sell or trade weapons in areas where the weapons may be used to harm civilians, be diverted to terrorist organizations, or be re-sold to countries where the first two situations are possible. The ATT requires all member countries to set up oversight commissions for traded weapons to ensure this provision is met.
This treaty is deserving of our praise as it will attempt to put an end to the illicit sale and diversion of arms to areas where they are used to commit homicide, human-rights violations, and even genocide. Please sign below to support this wonderful push for global peace.
Dear General-Secretary Ki-Moon,
The UNDOA’s passage and enactment of the landmark Arms Trade Treaty is welcome news for this coming holiday season. The UN’s commitment to world peace is always refreshing, but this treaty is a much-needed step in the right direction towards global disarmament. This treaty will enforce governmental responsibility and accountability that will do a great deal to thwart the illicit sale of arms and their diversion to areas where they are used to harm innocent people. It will save lives and that is a priceless pursuit.
If the world is ever to move forward, more measures like this must be taken to reduce violence and promote peace. I want to personally thank you and commend the UN’s effort towards forming a safer, more peaceful planet. Please introduce more measure like this in the future.
