Target: Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni
Goal: Don’t criminalize the promotion of homosexuality in Uganda
The Ugandan government continues to fight for legislation that would repress homosexuality by sentencing anyone “funding for purposes of promoting unnatural sexual practices” and “exhibiting unnatural sexual practices” for up to seven years in jail. This measure, called the “Prohibition of the Promotion of Unnatural Sexual Practices Bill,” comes after the previously failed attempt at passing the Anti-Homosexuality Act, which would have convicted people for simply being homosexual and giving them life sentences. Thankfully, Uganda’s Constitutional Court shot down the Anti-Homosexuality Act, but only due to the fact that it was not introduced to Parliament properly. Another reason could be the international backlash Uganda received from the legislation and the threats to cut off aid to the country.
The fight has once again resurfaced with this new legislation being written currently, except this legislation could be even more repressive due to its wording. The legislation would make it a crime to “promote” homosexuality and could therefore be far more reaching due to the vague definition. This could impact not only homosexuals, but charities, LGBT groups, and activists that work to support them in their quest for equality.
While Ugandan Presiden Yoweri Museveni was originally for the Anti-Homosexuality Act, he saw the impact it had on international relations and has not been promoting this new legislation. Please urge the president to take a stronger stance on this issue and publicly denounce the new anti-homosexuality legislation.
Dear Mr. President Yoweri Museveni,
The Ugandan government has been making international news lately with the new legislation that prohibits the promotion of homosexuality. While you supported the previous legislation called the Anti-Homosexuality Act, I am glad that you recognized the ramifications of this measure and withdrew your support.
It is deeply disturbing how pervasive the Ugandan government is against homosexuals in Uganda. They are humans and should have equal rights like anyone else in your country. It is not enough to simply not support this new legislation being drafted. You must be more vocal about this issue and denounce those who support this repressive legislation. By failing to do so, you could potentially affect not only the LGBT community in a negative way, but also your country’s economy due to international backlash. Please consider all these possibilities and make the right choice by standing by the LGBT community.
