Target: Center for Food Safety Executive Director, Andrew Kimbrell and Humane Society of the United States CEO, Wayne Pacelle
Goal: Thank animal welfare and food safety groups for suing the FDA over harmful animal feed additive
The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was sued by food safety and animal health groups because the agency did not fully study the effects of a common animal feed additive before approving its use for livestock. This additive has been proven to have harmful effects on people, animals, and the environment.
The animal feed additive is a drug called ractopamine, which was approved over ten years ago by the FDA without acceptable measures to prove it was safe for consumption. Ractopamine is used to promote leanness because it can turn feed into muscle instead of fat. The Center for Food and Safety and the Humane Society of the United States have stressed the fact that it is banned in several other countries, including China, Russia, and Malaysia, yet it has not been banned in the United States.
The lawsuit is looking into several ractopamine-based drugs and requires the FDA to conduct the proper environmental review required by law. The Center for Food Safety has expressed concerns that this drug will seriously impact the environment, animals, and consumers who come in contact with it. It believes that the FDA did not properly follow the law when passing this drug. It also does not think that the FDA fully assessed the potential damage that it may cause. If other countries are able to ban its use, the United States should, too.
Please sign this petition to praise the Center for Food Safety and the Humane Society of the U.S. for looking into this harmful animal feed additive.
Dear Andrew Krimbell and Wayne Pacelle,
Your organizations, the Center for Food Safety and the Humane Society of the United States, have come together to present the FDA with a lawsuit over the use of a feed additive called ractopamine. So many other countries have successfully banned the use of this drug, yet the United States still uses it for its livestock.
Thank you for presenting the harmful effects that this drug can have on people, the environment, and the animals that it comes in contact with. Hopefully this lawsuit will force the FDA to stop allowing the use of ractopamine once and for all.
