Keep Stolen Seafood Out of the U.S.

Blue fin Tuna

Target: President Barack Obama

Goal: Ensure that all fish received by the United States is legally obtained

Americans consume 5 billion pounds of sea food annually, although the nation doesn’t know how much of that is legally obtained fish. These unaccounted fish pose a threat to the environment, as taking too many out of the oceans could damage our ecosystems. President Obama is creating a task force to ensure that all fish entering the United States are ones that are legally obtained. As citizens of the world, we should ensure that President Obama and his task force create guidelines that are strict and meant to protect the environment and the fish population.

Scientists around the world are growing concerned at the size, lifespan, and population density of our marine life, notably fish. As commercial fishing peaked in the previous decades, fishermen have been hauling massive amounts of fish out of the ocean. It has caused the decline of many fishing populations, and fish are becoming smaller and smaller because many do not make it to their adult years before being caught. It has led to many fish being caught illegally in international waters. The fishing industry also continues to use slaves, and keep them in the industry through means of intimidation and fear.

What Obama’s task force can do is create guidelines regarding where the fish were caught, provide basic information regarding the suppliers, and give the public access to this information. Consumers should have the right to know where their food comes from, especially if these fish were caught through the use of slavery or other illegal means. If you believe that the fish industry should be regulated to keep illegal fish out of the economy, sign this petition. President Obama and his task force need to know where we stand on this policy.

Dear President Obama,

In December, 2014, you will be creating a task force whose purpose is to create guidelines regarding legally caught fish. In recent months, news outlets have uncovered jarring discoveries about the fishing industry. These discoveries include the use of slave labor, and catching more than the legally allowed amount of fish. These actions need to stop, and consumers need to be made aware of this.

I encourage you and your task force to make guidelines that state a product’s origin and their supplies so consumers will know what they are purchasing. Our oceans are in peril and the only way to save it to make sure that the fishing industry is heavily regulated.
