Don’t Destroy One Natural Area to Restore Another

No Net Loss Initiative, biodiversity offsetting

Target: Karmenu Vella, European Commissioner of Environment, Maritime Affairs, and Fisheries

Goal: Stop the “No Net Loss Initiative,” which approves the destruction of one natural area to restore another

In order to meet a 2020 demand of no biodiversity loss, the European Union has proposed a No Net Loss Initiative. This plan might sound appealing but it approves the destruction of nature in one location if balanced by the restoration or preservation of natural land in a totally different geographical location inside the European Union. Action must be taken now to stop this ridiculous and destructive proposal.

The name of the No Net Loss Initiative is tricking the public into thinking this policy is truly for the good of the environment. However, you cannot pick and choose where to improve and destroy the environment. This legislation will only harm nature and give power to businesses looking to destroy nature. The term for such an action is referred to as biodiversity offsetting.

Nature should not be seen as a commodity. The action of destroying one area in hopes of rehabilitating another is only pacifying the license to trash and degrade. Wildlife and plant habitats are complex. Biodiversity offsetting will actually add more pressure toward biodiversity. This initiative can only be seen as an easy route to speeding up planning and development applications. Nature is not replaceable and the No Net Loss Initiative creates an idea that it is.

In reality, the environment isn’t the only entity at risk. Communities end up losing precious natural areas because of nature’s proximity to the community. At this point, it isn’t about what natural area is being destroyed but where. Communities lose their access to nature. The important social role hiking trails and fishing holes provide toward people cannot be offset.

By signing this petition, you are urging the European Commissioner of Environment, Maritime Affairs, and Fisheries to stop the No Net Loss Initiative and consider meaningful and clear ways to preserve nature’s biodiversity.

Dear Commissioner Vella,

The No Net Loss Initiative is not a smart move. The environment and nature should not be seen as a commodity. Destroying one natural area cannot be acceptable behavior simply because another geographically different area will be saved.

Biodiversity offsetting is cheating. The No Net Loss Initiative is only making things easier for developers to destroy natural areas around communities. Communities and nature will be the biggest losers while business and infrastructure pacify their destructive developments. This idea of offsetting will create even more pressure on biodiversity. Loved and cherished natural areas around flourishing communities will be destroyed. At this point, the location of the degradation of nature does matter. Seek to preserve biodiversity in a fair and ecologically sound way. Please take action to stop the No Net Loss Initiative.
