Target: Circuit Judge Rex Burlison
Goal: Applaud judge’s decision to declare marriage ban unconstitutional
A state judge has found Missouri’s ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional, paving the way for same-sex couples to finally apply for marriage licenses. Circuit Judge Rex Burlison found that the state’s decade-old voter-approved prohibition on same-sex marriages violated the Equal Protection and Due Process Clauses of the U.S. Constitution.
Judge Burlison’s ruling marks the 48th pro-same-sex marriage decision from a state or federal court since 2013’s landmark ruling where the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act. Judge Burlison concluded that any same-sex couple who satisfies the requirements for marriage is legally entitled to a marriage license. In addition to Judge Burlison’s ruling, another state judge, J. Dale Youngs, also ruled that Missouri’s refusal to recognize legal same-sex marriages performed in other states was indeed unlawful. Missouri will now begin recognizing same-sex marriages performed in states where such unions are already sanctioned.
Although it is unclear whether counties across Missouri are prepared to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, the state’s overwhelming support of the LGBT community is apparent. Missouri’s attorney general, Chris Koster, has publicly announced that he supports same-sex marriage stating, “Missouri’s future will be one of inclusion, not exclusion.”
So far, four same-sex couples have already married in St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay’s office. And, hundreds, if not more, couples are estimated to finally join in matrimony with legal backing. Sign the petition to applaud Circuit Judge Rex Burlison’s ruling and support same-sex marriage.
Dear Circuit Judge Burlison,
It has recently come to my attention that your ruling will now make it legal for same-sex couples to finally get legally married in the state of Missouri. As an LGBT supporter and advocate, I am truly overjoyed that you recognized the prejudice of the state’s original law, and made a brave decision to overrule it.
As more states battle over the legitimacy of same-sex unions, with the most recent being that of judges from North Carolina who chose to resign rather than perform gay marriages, your decision shows great empathy and progress.
Your efforts deserve to be lauded. Thank you for supporting same-sex marriages and, most importantly, equality for all.
