Target: Camden County School Superintendent Dr. Will Hardin
Goal: Dismiss the high school teacher who told a student that she would like to kill black people
It was recently reported that a teacher and head of a high school math department in North Carolina told a student that if she only had a few hours to live, she would kill all black people. This was reported by the student in question and others who overheard the remark. The teacher has not been fired and has been allowed to return to the classroom where she has a significant influence over many young minds.
)vert and violent racism should never be allowed in any classroom in the U.S. The fact that this teacher, Cynthia Ramsey, was not immediately fired for saying that she literally wanted to murder black people is beyond irresponsible, reprehensible, and downright dangerous for her students. Kids are very impressionable, and children of color are more likely to be to bullied–-especially in racist environments. Studies have also found that black children are more likely to be punished and punished more severely for small infractions than white students. This has a serious impact on the way black children view themselves and can result in future bad behavior and poor self-esteem.
It’s clear to anyone paying attention that subtle forms of racism still exist in this country. However, severe and overt racism such as this should never be tolerated when it’s coming from those who have influence over our nation’s children. Sign this petition to demand that Ramsey be fired immediately.
Dear Dr. Hardin,
A teacher within your district was recently reported for telling a student that she would kill as many black people as she could if she only had a few hours to live. I don’t have to explain to you why saying something like this to a student as an authority figure and influencer is inappropriate and unacceptable. However, I understand that Cynthia Ramsey has not yet been fired and has in fact been allowed to return to teaching her class.
Why any school staff member who expressed a desire to kill members of a certain race would be allowed to continue teaching is beyond me. Children of color in this country are still all too often the victims of racist bullying and othering by their peers, and a statement like this by a teacher only justifies and encourages such behavior. I also shouldn’t have to tell you how devastating bullying can be for any student. If you won’t punish a teacher for saying such a thing, why should students think they would be punished for mistreating their peers of color?
I demand that you remove this teacher from the classroom and immediately fire her. Someone this violently racist should never be allowed to have authority and influence over others, especially over children. Failure to administer the appropriate punishment is an indication that you sanction Ramsey’s attitudes.
