Target: Senate Majority Leader-Elect Mitch McConnell
Goal: Urge new Republican majority to continue to protect and preserve our environment
With Republicans now holding the majority of the seats in the Senate, many environmental groups are concerned that Congress will approve the dreaded Keystone XL pipeline and lift a four-year ban on crude oil. These protections, which were put in place by concerned environmentalists, could be lifted if the Republican Senate feels that corporate profits are more important than the environment. We need to tell Congress that this action will not be tolerated; taking care of the environment is the responsibility of everyone, even our politicians.
National Geographic recently released an article expressing concern that the Republican-controlled Senate will bar President Obama’s new plan to limit greenhouse gases from power plants. This is of huge concern, since greenhouse gases are what causes climate change. If these limits were removed or set higher, the environment could experience drastic changes at a faster rate.
The Keystone XL pipeline is a project many environmentalists and President Obama are against. If approved, this massive pipeline, which will carry crude oil from Canada to South Dakota, will only strengthen the country’s dependence on crude oil. Crude oil is also much more energy intensive to process than conventional oil. Additionally, if a leak were to occur in this pipeline, the environmental consequences would be dire.
Republican Majority Leader Mitch McConnell intends to get the pipeline approved. Many Republican politicians do not believe in climate change, with some calling it the “greatest hoax” in American history. This opinion is greatly concerning, especially when most scientists the world over have proved its existence. Tell Senator McConnell to keep these restrictions and protections in place so our environment can be preserved for future generations.
Dear Senator McConnell,
It concerns me that you are willing to approve the Keystone XL pipeline, a project that would allow crude oil to be transported from Canada to South Dakota. I do not understand why you want to prolong the United States’ reliance on crude oil, as it is dangerous to our environment. Our scientists have proven that climate change exists, and approving this pipeline along with removing limitations on greenhouse gases will only worsen this phenomenon.
I urge you as a citizen of the world not to let this happen. The United States should be focusing on renewable sources, like solar or wind energy, not crude oil. We should be working towards getting rid of greenhouse gases, not adding to them. Stop ruining this planet that we all need to survive. Protect it and keep it clean so those in future generations can enjoy it as well.
