Target: Philip Dilley, Chair of the United Kingdom’s Environmental Agency
Goal: Stop the addition of three nuclear reactors from damaging a crucial, natural buffer zone
A nuclear site in the United Kingdom seeks to add three new nuclear reactors. However, the nuclear reactors will be situated on a natural area that is an important buffer zone intended to protect wildlife and surrounding communities from the nuclear plant site. Action must be taken now to stop the construction and operation of these three nuclear reactors.
Known as the Moorside Nuclear Project, the three reactors will be an addition to the Sellafield site in Cumbria, United Kingdom. Moorside will be built on the shore, farmland, woodland, and marshlands that surround the Sellafield Site. The project greatly impacts the local environment. Because a great amount of water will be needed to cool the reactors, the water fluctuations will affect the habitat of sensitive wildlife species by impacting behavior, distribution, and egg and larvae success.
Moorside will be built on what is now referred to as a buffer zone. The buffer zone creates a safe barrier between towns and the nuclear site. The buffer zone is crucial to preventing groundwater contamination if a leak occurred at the nuclear plant. The three reactors vying for this site will be three AP1000s. This new type of nuclear reactor has no prior operational history. Also extremely alarming, Toshiba is the company looking to build and operate the reactors. Toshiba has not had the best track record. Known famously for the Fukushima nuclear disaster, Toshiba should not be trusted to expand and operate more nuclear reactors on this site.
By signing this petition, you are urging the Chair of United Kingdom’s Environment Agency, Philip Dilley, to stop the proposal to build three new nuclear reactors on the Sellafield site.
Dear Mr. Dilley,
The Sellafield site is already an extremely radioactive area of the United Kingdom. Adding three new nuclear reactors will destroy the safe buffer zone distancing the nuclear plant from surrounding communities. Proposed by Toshiba, the three nuclear reactors will be a new reactor hybrid that has never had prior operational history.
Toshiba does not have the best track record when it comes to nuclear safety. The disaster of Fukushima alone should stop you from approving the construction of their proposed nuclear reactors. The reactors will require a damaging amount of water that will affect local marine wildlife by disturbing water fluctuations and temperature. Please take the action to deny the proposal to build these three nuclear reactors. The local environment truly relies on your decision.
