Target: Virginia Congressman Jim Moran

Goal: Congratulate Virginia Congressman Jim Moran for devoting two decades to protecting animals

Cruelty Free International recently presented its Lord Houghton Award to Virginia Congressman Jim Moran in recognition of his contributions to animal welfare. For more than two decades Congressman Houghton has stood out as one of the United States’ foremost patrons of animal welfare. Please take a moment to thank the congressman for all of his incredible work to protect animals as he retires.

Lord Houghton was a British Labor Party member who actively campaigned for changes in legislation that would improve animal welfare and encourage better treatment of animals. The Lord Houghton Award was created in 1980 in recognition of his work and has been given annually to those who have best continued it. During his time in Congress, Congressman Moran has sponsored many key bills to improve the lives of animals and has served as co-chair of the Congressional Animal Protection Caucus, in which he was instrumental in enacting bans on dog fighting, horse slaughter, and the sale of cat and dog fur.

Earlier this year, Moran also introduced a bill to ban animal testing for cosmetics after a one-year phase-in period. Congressman Moran responded to the announcement of his award, saying, “I have always believed that humans have a moral obligation to treat animals with respect, prevent wanton cruelty, and provide living conditions that allow animals to lead full and healthy lives.”

Please take a moment to sign the petition below to thank Congressman Jim Moran for using his time in office to better the lives of animals in the United States.

Dear Congressman Moran,

Congratulations on receiving the Lord Houghton Award. During your time in office, you have sponsored a number of bills intended to improve quality of life for animals and offer them the protection they deserve and that, as you stated, humans are responsible for providing. This includes your most recent proposed ban on animal testing, which will hopefully, and finally, put an end to the production and sale of cosmetics tested on animals in the United States.

Thank you so much for your contributions to animal welfare. I can only hope that there will be more people with your level of kindness and compassion in Congress in the future.
