Target: Stella Mateo, Founder and CEO of SheRides
Goal: Applaud taxi service focused on women’s safety and empowerment
Cabs are a regular part of life for many urbanites, especially after dark when getting into a car with a stranger is increasingly dangerous. For women, this danger is exponentially higher than it is for men—that includes female taxi drivers and female passengers. Since the 1960s, high crime rates have caused women to abandon the profession fearing for their safety, and now only some two percent of taxi drivers in the United States are women, while 60 percent of cab passengers are women. For Stella Mateo, this disparity was too egregious to ignore, which is why she founded SheRides, a taxi and car service app offering female drivers for female passengers.
This app offers a sense of security and peace of mind to users, who can search for female drivers in their area. They can recognize the car intended for them by either a SheRides logo or a pink stripe, while the driver will be wearing a hot pink scarf. The app may prove a huge boon to women who avoid hailing cabs due to religious, social, or other concerns about talking to or being in confined spaces with strange men. In addition, SheRides also encourages women in New York City, where the company is based, to pursue careers as cab drivers without having to worry about discrimination, sexual harassment, or feelings of insecurity. Notable cases of female cab drivers or passengers getting assaulted have spurred similar endeavors abroad in the United Kingdom, India, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. Mateo has commented to the New York Times that she has plans to expand the company to other urban areas, including the District of Columbia, Chicago, and Miami.
By signing this petition, you are applauding Mateo for providing a woman-centric car service app that helps women feel safe while also expanding their career opportunities.
Dear Stella Mateo,
I am writing to you regarding your company SheRides. I am very excited that such a car service app is in development for the United States. Allowing women to circumvent the awkward, potentially dangerous situation of putting themselves in a confined space with a strange man will provide a much greater sense of self-sufficiency and safety for female urbanites. Plus, because your company is recruiting female drivers, more women are empowered to enter an overwhelmingly male profession without having to worry about facing discrimination or sexual harassment from male patrons. This app truly presents a winning situation for all involved.
Thank you so much for starting SheRides to provide the women of the Big Apple with options for greater security and comfort when it comes to using a car service. Thank you for providing opportunities for women to enter the male-dominated livery service industry without having to be subject to harassment or violence. I encourage you to keep expanding your company for use on different devices and in different cities.
