Applaud Multi-National Agreement to Cut Carbon Emissions

Target: President of the European Council, Jose Manual Barosso

Goal: Applaud agreement to cut carbon emissions by 40 percent by the year 2030

After lengthy and heated discussions over the future of energy in the European Union (EU), an ambitious deal has been made by top EU leaders. An agreement was reached to cut carbon emissions by 40 percent by 2030 compared with recorded levels from 1990 and to increase renewable energy use to 27 percent of overall energy consumption. The deal strikes a compromise between nations with a heavy reliance on coal and oil industries for their economy and countries willing to drastically limit pollution through energy-efficient means.

The deal comes in anticipation of a 2015 world climate summit in Paris and will hopefully lead the way for even more ambitious emissions targets. The binding bloc holds each country in the EU responsible for reaching its goals. Although many climate activists do not believe that the deal goes far enough, the European Commission president, Jose Manuel Barroso, reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to the environment, saying, “No player in the world is as ambitious as the EU.”

With its greenhouse emissions deal, the EU has set itself apart as a world leader in taking effective action towards climate rehabilitation, setting the stage for the rest of the world to join in committing to renewable and responsible energy for future generations. Dear President Barosso,

The recent deal struck amongst the members of the European Union to cut carbon emissions by 40 percent by the year 2030 makes clear how seriously Europe is facing climate change. Thank you for encouraging other world leaders to look at their own policies for the coming years as we face the crisis globally. The agreement is ambitious, cost-effective, and attainable and promotes a fair compromise between nations with a heavier reliance on coal and fossil fuels and countries seeking to effect even more drastic changes.

The agreement binds nations to their responsibility to our planet and paves the way for successive nations to make their own ever more ambitious goals for progressive climate action. Like for no crisis before, the world is truly in this together.

I applaud you for leading the way towards a sustainable future.
