Target: Sonoma County Sheriff, Steve Freitas
Goal: Shut down a California duck farm for displaying animal cruelty
One of the largest farms in California, the Reichardt Duck Farm was recently searched due to complaints of animal abuse and neglect. An undercover animal rights activist was hired to work at the farm for a few months and took it upon herself to film the horrific cruelty she witnessed before turning her evidence into the authorities for further investigation.
The Reichardt Duck Farm Sonoma houses about 300,000 ducks. Recently, the County Sheriff’s investigators served the farm a search warrant for alleged animal abuse. They searched the building along with police officers, veterinarians, and crime scene photographers. They were looking for any signs of abuse and neglect and whether the ducks had been euthanized improperly.
The activist allegedly uncovered a multitude of abuse from working at the farm for five weeks during her summer. She claims that the abuse started immediately when the ducks hatched. One of the claims she shared with authorities was that the workers were asked to cut off pieces of the ducks’ bills so that they didn’t kill each other in their overcrowded living space. Although ducks are supposed to live in water for most of their lives, they spent their time at this farm in wired mesh cages. The activist also informed authorities of the farm’s illegal methods of euthanasia. They brutally paralyzed the ducks in electrified baths and dumped them into boiling hot water to be de-feathered while they were still alive.
The case will be held at the District Attorney’s Office for further investigation. Please sign this petition to urge authorities to shut down this abusive duck farm.
Dear Sheriff Freitas,
We rarely get a chance to see the realities of the everyday at animal farms. Luckily in this case, a brave animal activist worked at the Reichardt Duck Farm for five weeks and was able to uncover and report the abuse and cruelty that took place there.
Everything from clipping ducks’ bills to their cramped and unnatural housing and its horrific euthanasia methods are a clear violation of California law. It is illegal to deny animals access to proper living spaces and veterinary care. Their ways of euthanizing the ducks are cruel and unusual. They should be held criminally responsible if these allegations are proven to be true. Please take steps to shut down this animal farm for abusing the animals in its care.
