Target: Jan Morgan, owner of The Gun Cave Indoor Firing Range
Goal: Immediately and publicly lift ban on Muslims at shooting range
An Arkansas gun range has recently instated a “Muslim-free zone” policy, in which individuals are denied the chance to patronize the business solely on the basis of their faith. Not only is this policy legally tenuous, but it is based on deeply problematic understandings of Islam and Muslims in general. Help demand that the owner of the shooting range immediately lift the discriminatory ban.
Jan Morgan, owner of The Gun Cave Indoor Firing Range in Hot Springs, Arkansas, recently declared her business a “Muslim Free Zone [sic]” in order to, as she says,”provide a safe environment for her customers.” Based on what she says are her years of study of the Qur’an and a laundry list of “facts” that echo those so frequently given by anti-Muslim conservatives, this ban reeks of Islamophobia and is reminiscent of a time when businesses were free to refuse service to African Americans based only on the color of their skin. Indeed, it would be interesting to see if a white Muslim man, or white Muslim woman who does not hold to the hejab were somehow identified and refused service by Morgan–it is difficult to imagine a way that Muslims would be identified and refused service at her shooting range without, say, the use of profiling, like we all see in airports around the country.
This ban is extremely problematic and has no place in our modern society. Let Morgan know that others will not take her Islamophobia lying down. Add your name to the petition below to demand that Morgan immediately drop her discriminatory ban at The Gun Cave Indoor Firing Range.
Dear Ms. Morgan,
You have recently declared your business, The Gun Cave Indoor Firing Range, a “Muslim-free zone” in order to, you say, provide your customers with a safe environment in which to enjoy shooting. While I respect your desire to keep yourself and your customers safe in an environment with such inherent potential for danger, I strongly disagree with what you are doing. Your ban is discriminatory and based on deeply flawed understandings of Islam and Muslims.
You base your ban, in part, on the fact that the Qur’an includes a number of violent verses. Yet you ignore the fact that the Hebrew and Christian bibles also include a number of violent verses. Where is the ban on people of the Jewish and Christian faiths? If you are going to hold those of a certain religion accountable for the contents of their holy books, logic dictates you should ban Christian and Jewish people from your shooting range as well.
You also base your ban in part on the number of terrorist attacks Muslims have committed on American soil since 9/11. Yet you ignore the history of extremist-Christian terrorism that America has also experienced. Again, since this is the case, where is the ban on Christians at The Gun Cave Indoor Firing Range?
The answer to these questions is that, obviously, religions and those who follow them–including Islam and Muslims–are much more complex than the logic you are applying to Islam and Muslims to justify your ban takes for granted. I cannot in good faith see such extreme and blatant Islamophobia and bigotry and let it go unaddressed. I demand that you immediately and publicly abandon the ban on Muslims at your shooting range.
