Save The Last Remaining Pristine Ocean Region: Don’t Allow Drilling In The Arctic

Target: United States President Barack Obama

Goal: To protect the wild and untouched Arctic region from invasive and destructive offshore drilling operations.

Dependence on foreign oil, especially in the past couple decades, has become a source of political and financial frustration.  Oil prices continue to skyrocket and industry officials are relentless in their efforts to gain permission for domestic offshore drilling. As a result, President Obama’s State of the Union Address included plans to open 75 percent of America’s potential oil and gas resources to drilling, including the pristine waters of the Beaufort Sea, Chukchi Sea and Cook Inlet off the coast of Alaska. The Arctic is the world’s last wild and untouched ocean and should not be included in the President’s drilling plan.

The remoteness and severe weather conditions of the Arctic has kept the region relatively sheltered from human interference. Marine ecosystems have been safe from the disastrous and devastatingly destructive consequences of oil spills and industrial pollutants. It is a pristine region that should remain untouched by the filthy hands of the oil industry. Offshore drilling will not only endanger the fragile marine ecosystems, it will place hired workers in extreme danger due to regional isolation and harsh weather patterns. Because scientists have only been able to conduct limited research in the region, and because the closest Coast Guard base would be 1,000 miles away from drill leasing sites, an oil spill would be near impossible clean and workers could be stuck in the harsh expanse of the cold Arctic Ocean for weeks without help.

Currently, the proposed offshore drilling plan is still in draft form, giving citizens an opportunity to fight back. By signing the petition below you will help convince President Obama to exclude the leasing of the Arctic’s Beaufort and Chukchi Seas from the proposed drilling plan. The Arctic’s wild and abundant seas are simply too sensitive for drilling operations and must be protected.

Dear United States President Barack Obama,

The wild Arctic region is too sensitive for the invasive and destructive operations of the oil industry. Opening the region to such abuse will not only harm its complex ecosystems, it will also place oil personnel in grave danger.

The harsh, cold Arctic climate is too unpredictable to develop efficient methods for oil spill clean-up, which will kill the pristine and untamed ocean. And, in case an emergency arises, the closest Coast Guard base is 1,000 miles from the drilling sites; oil workers will be left to fend for themselves for potentially weeks at a time.

The last remaining unspoiled region must be saved. Please take action and remove the Arctic region from your new proposed offshore drilling plans.
