Target: President of Mexico Enrique Pena Nieto
Goal: Stop the routine use of torture on Mexican citizens
Amnesty International recently conducted an investigation on the use of torture in Mexico, and its findings are shocking. More than 60 percent of Mexican citizens are terrified of being arrested by police officers for fear of being tortured. Citizens are often arrested due to the Mexican government cracking down on drugs, but has done little to protect its citizens from abuse at the hands of the police. The Mexican president must end this mistreatment of his people.
The use of torture has been on the rise since 2006, when the war on drugs was declared in Mexico. Police and military officials are allowed to detain victims for long periods of time, where they are at risk of beatings, sexual assault, electric shock, and other kinds of torture. A recent report depicted the abuses that victims experience at the hands of police and military officials. Thanks to the transnational war on drugs that is backed by the United States, the number of torture victims has risen by an astonishing 600 percent since 2003.
Seven thousand complaints regarding torture were sent to the National Human Rights Commission between the years 2010 and 2013. Less than one percent of these reports have been reviewed so far. Sign this petition to tell President Nieto to punish police officers who use torture and to end the use of torture on detainees.
Dear President Nieto,
Amnesty International recently released a report regarding the use of torture in your country, and the findings are disturbing. More than half of your citizens are afraid of torture at the hands of police or military officials. The use of such widespread barbaric practice should be banned, as it violates a person’s bodily integrity.
I urge you to put a stop to this at once. I realize that the use of torture has resulted from the war on drugs, but humans shouldn’t be hurt to obtain information or for any other reason. Your police force has become corrupt and your people know it. Citizens should be protected by the police, not be fearful of them. I implore you to stop this practice immediately, as it spreads fear and terror among your people.
