Applaud Creation of Ape Sanctuary

Cross River Gorilla

Target: Prime Minister of Cameroon Philemon Yang

Goal: Applaud creation of Tofala Hill Wildlife Sanctuary for the Cross River gorillas

One of the world’s rarest apes, the Cross River gorillas, will have a better chance of surviving thanks to Prime Minister Philemon Yang who officially created the Tofala Hill Wildlife Sanctuary in South West Cameroon. The sanctuary is meant to protect the apes from threats such as hunting and habitat destruction, which are greatly responsible for the gorillas decline. Thank the prime minister for creating a refuge for the Cross River gorilla.

The Cross River gorilla is known for its tool use, and spend an extensive amount of their lives on the ground. Unfortunately all western gorillas are endangered, but the Cross River gorillas are the most threatened. Despite being hunted for bush meat, Cross River gorillas are losing their habitat thanks to companies who are clear cutting the forest to plant palm oil plantations.

To combat the palm oil industry, Cameroon has created other refuges for the gorillas. The National Takamanda National Park and Kagwene Gorilla Sanctuary were created in 2008 to stop poachers from killing these endangered apes. It is agreed that the best way to give these gorillas a chance to survive is to fend off poachers and give them plenty of land to survive. The Tofala Hill Wildlife Sanctuary was also created thanks to generous supporters and donors who care about the longevity of the Cross River gorilla. Thank Prime Minister Philemon Yang for making this sanctuary official, giving the Cross River gorilla a chance to thrive.

Dear Prime Minister Philemon Yang,

Recently, you signed into being a sanctuary for the Cross River gorilla, a rare subspecies of gorillas that is critically endangered. Gorillas as a whole are in danger of disappearing because of human activities such as poaching, and habitat destruction. It is also unfortunate that gorillas are disappearing from Ebola, but I am glad that your country is taking measures to ensure these animals keep thriving.

I ask that you continue to enlist the support of citizens both in your country and around the world to save the Cross River gorilla. Their dwindling numbers are a result of human activity and it is up to us to rectify this problem. Thank you for creating the Tofala Hill Wildlife Sanctuary and I wish the organization the best of luck in keeping the Cross River gorilla safe and thriving.
