Don’t Increase Pollution

Target: Govenor of Michigan, Rick Snyder

Goal: Don’t weaken clear air standards to benefit big polluters

Michigan legislators seek to reduce air quality regulations for industry emissions. With the quality of air diminishing worldwide, this move is not a smart one. These loosing standards put Michigan residents at risk while industry giants reap the benefits. Action must be taken now to maintain healthy communities in Michigan as well as save the integrity of Michigan air.

Industry manufacturers welcome the loosened regulations to maintain economic competitiveness with other states in the country. Although supporters of the emission reduction claim the change will still maintain healthy air quality for citizens, many locals and environmentalists can’t help but disagree. The change will reduce the number of monitored substances by 25 percent and around 500 substances will go unregulated. These substances would no longer be considered in smokestack emission models.

The 500 substances looking to be abolished from monitoring include compounds with low toxicity levels, low emission rates, and substances for which the health effects are unknown. Compounds for which no adequate health studies have been conducted should not be excused from regulation. These substances could be carcinogens. Exposing local communities to emissions with unknown health effects is not within the interest of Michigan citizens. The risk does not just lie within one substance but also the combination of exposure to multiple substances.

By signing this petition, you are urging the governor of Michigan to oppose the change to reduce air emissions, especially compounds for which health risks are completely unknown.

Dear Governor Snyder,

Michigan citizens’ health is at risk by the proposal to reduce emission regulations for industry polluters. Maintaining healthy air quality for state communities should be a top priority. Loosening air emissions standards should only apply to the substances known to pose no risk to human health. Five hundred emission compounds are sought for elimination from smokestack emission models. Disregarding the emissions with unknown health risks to humans could be disastrous.

Human health should be of high value to our governments and companies. Proper studies need to be conducted to understand the health and environmental impacts of every substance emitted from factories as well as the risk of exposure to multiple smokestack compounds. Please take action to deny the change in regulation of industry emissions. If the health data of certain compounds is unknown or inadequate, it should not be ignored.
