Target: Mayor of Rome, Ignazio Marino
Goal: Applaud mayor of Rome for registering gay marriages despite its illegality
As activists in United States continue to face opposition against gay marriage, the mayor of Rome has stood up in support of this union, registering 16 same-sex couples for marriage. Gay marriage is illegal in Italy and the city is within walking distance of the Vatican, the Catholic church’s central location. Despite the law and the backlash Mayor Marino has received from right-wing protesters, he believes that he is doing the right thing and urges Italy to change its unethical laws. Applaud this man for his bravery and for standing up for the rights of gays and lesbians.
Despite Mayor Marino’s well-meaning intentions, the Interior Minister Angelino Alfano sent a letter to all prefects in the area stating that all foreign gay marriages would be void. Officials have agreed to these actions and are nullifying these marriages immediately. Nevertheless, Mayor Marino has received astounding support for his actions; deafening applause greeted the mayor and gay couples he had married. Marino states that he has married couples who were from Spain, Portugal, and the United States.
Police have removed the 70 or so protesters who gathered around the city hall reception room to fight against these unsanctioned marriages. Signs read, “Stop Marino” and “Transcriptions don’t make families.” The bishops have also responded in kind to Marino’s actions, claiming that a marriage is between a man and a woman. They are infuriated that Marino registered gay marriages right after they concluded a two-week-long summit on the values of a Catholic family.
Italy not only outlaws gay marriage but gay adoption as well. These are a heinous violation of human rights and must be rectified at once. Applaud Mayor Ignazio Marino for standing up for the rights of gays and lesbians, and for bringing change to Italy.
Dear Mayor Marino,
Recently you registered 16 gay marriages, many of which were between foreign couples. Your actions were greeted with both applause and protest. All human beings should have the right to marry whoever they wish, but many countries refuse to honor this right. I am glad that you’ve defied the laws of your country and tied the knot for several couples.
Please do not let the Vatican or anyone else tell you that gay marriages are illegal or against the natural order. These people shouldn’t have the right to take away someone’s happiness, especially when it involves their significant other. I urge you to continue with your work and hopefully positive change will come to Italy. Thank you for your bravery and compassion.
