Stop Importing Toxic Food Container Products

Goal: Ban the importation of food container products made with hazardous chemicals

Although banned in food container products produced in the United States, dangerous chemicals are still finding their way into American take-out containers and pizza boxes. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has asked domestic manufacturers of food products and containers to stop using these toxic chemicals, which include long-chain perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) and perchlorate. However, overseas producers of food container products still use these chemicals in manufacturing. Action must be taken now to stop the importation of these poisoned food container products, which pose a risk to human health.

PFCs and perchlorate can find their way into our bodies through our food from chemically-induced containers. Perchlorate is added to food paper products as a sealing agent as well as to reduce static in dry food packaging. PFCs are popular in pizza boxes and sandwich wrappers to keep grease from saturating the paper. However, a greasy wrapper is better than risking human health. Chemically contaminated food from PFCs and perchlorate have adverse effects on human health. Perchlorate poisoning has been tested in numerous scientific studies on animals. The chemical interferes with the thyroid gland’s ability to make hormones. From this, children and developing fetuses are most at risk because the thyroid is essential for growth and development. As for PFCs, health risks from these chemicals include damage to the male reproductive system and reduction in fetal growth in pregnant woman. Although it is cheaper, the FDA needs to ban the importation of poisoned food container products from China and India.

By signing this petition, you are urging the FDA to stop the importation of food paper products containing PFCs and perchlorate. The uses of these chemicals are simply not worth the risk they pose to consumers’ health.


Dear Director Keefe,

Although the use of perchlorate and PFCs are banned in the manufacturing of U.S. food containers, these chemicals are still finding their way into our food via imported food container products. Importing these products from China and India might be a cheap solution for food packaging, but the health of U.S. citizens is at stake.

Perchlorate, typically used as a sealing agent and static reducer in food packaging, targets the thyroid gland’s ability to make hormones. If perchlorate found its way into the food we eat from these food containers, future generations will be most at risk because the thyroid is crucial for growth and development. Furthermore, PFCs, which are used to reduce the saturation of grease on paper food products, also pose a threat to fetal growth and the male reproductive system.

Please take action to stop these chemicals from potentially reaching our food supply by banning the importation of such food container products immediately.
