Don’t Allow Concealed Weapons on College Campus

Target: Governor of Utah, Gary Herbert

Goal: Don’t allow people to carry concealed firearms on Utah State University’s campus

Feminist speaker Anita Sarkeesian was preparing to give a speech at Utah State University when an anonymous threat was issued. The attacker claimed that Sarkeesian and other feminists would be killed if she gave her speech. However it wasn’t the anonymous threat that made Sarkeesian cancel her event, it was the fact that the university would allow concealed firearms on campus. With her life already under threat, police and security officers shouldn’t have allowed any person to carry weapons onto school grounds, especially at a public event. Tell Governor Herbert to abolish this law, as it places many students in danger.

The university’s president and police officers later found out that the threat was not credible, but Sarkeesian decided to cancel her speech on principle. She learned that Utah police officers couldn’t take away concealed weapons from valid permit carriers and that enraged her.

She told the Associated Press, “It’s sort of mind boggling to me that they couldn’t take efforts to make sure there were no guns in an auditorium that was threatened with guns and a mass shooting. I don’t understand how they could be so cut and dry about it.”

Despite this statement, Utah State University felt confident with their security and ensured Sarkeesian that she would be safe. Students wouldn’t be able to enter the campus with backpacks, and police officers were posted around campus and in civilian clothes. Utah is the only state that allows concealed weapons on campus and this event has caused sparks to fly from both political parties.

It is a huge security issue when permit holders are allowed to carry weapons at an event where a possible mass shooting could take place. The United States has seen more than a handful of shootings in schools; these events shouldn’t be repeated on college campuses. Demand Governor Gary Herbert abolish this law immediately, as it places people in harm’s way.

Dear Governor Gary Herbert,

Recently feminist activist Anita Sarkeesian cancelled her talk at Utah State University not because she received an anonymous threat on her life, but because Utah state law allows valid permit holders to carry concealed weapons onto a college campus. Sarkeesian found this infuriating and cancelled the talk for fear of others getting hurt in a mass shooting.

The attacker had a list of various weapons: rifles, pistols, and pipe bombs, which he or she would use on all feminist supporters. Police shouldn’t have allowed any weapons on campus for security reasons. While all citizens have the right to bear arms, all citizens also have the right to live and this should have taken precedence. I urge you to abolish this law immediately, as it places innocent college students at risk of being harmed.
