Target: Steven Wise, Lawyer
Goal: Commend continuing efforts to give intelligent animals, including chimpanzees, the rights they deserve
A monumental decision to grant chimpanzees legal rights is being deliberated in a New York courtroom. The discussion has been inspired by a chimpanzee named Tommy, who is owned by a human named Patrick Lavery and lives in a shed in the Big Apple. Prompting the discussion is Steven Wise, a lawyer who has been fighting for intelligent animals’ rights for upwards of three decades. Wise believes that Tommy should be sent to a chimpanzee sanctuary, where he would be allowed to live his life peacefully.
Tommy is a 26-year-old chimpanzee who lives in a questionably “suitable” shed. Wise has declared that Tommy’s living quarters are not suitable given how intelligent the chimp is, but Tommy’s owner insists otherwise. Wise has a vision of a world where intelligent animals, including primates, orcas and other species, are seen as humans in the eyes of the law. Wise has been involved with many animal rights efforts throughout his life and stands up to animal abuse in every industry. He is proceeding with this vision by approaching the court with a proposed legal structure reminiscent of the one used for prison inmates. Wise believes that Tommy’s rights to freedom are being infringed upon.
Wise’s efforts are frowned upon by many who believe animal rights should be kept apart from human rights. If Tommy is granted human rights and, therefore, freedom, it is likely that many other cases of a similar nature will arise. Wise may be paving the way for all intelligent animals to gain human rights. Applaud Wise for his diligence in working to free Tommy and to ensure he lives out the remainder of his life in a suitable habitat.
Dear Mr. Wise,
You are a pioneer. You valiantly fight for the rights of Tommy the chimpanzee, so that he may be granted freedom. It is my hope that the court agrees with your reasoning and Tommy will be transported to a chimpanzee sanctuary.
I understand that you have been fighting for intelligent animals’ rights for upwards of three decades. It is my hope that your legal proceedings with Tommy’s case will evolve into important discussions regarding the rights of all intelligent animals. Please use my signature, along with all others that this petition generates, to help in the case to free Tommy. I understand that the verdict of whether or not rights will be granted is yet to be made; I sincerely hope it reads in Tommy’s favor.
Thank you for all that you do for intelligent, non-human animals.
