Target: Pope Francis
Goal: Commend the Vatican for accepting homosexuals into the Catholic church
A meeting between bishops and Pope Francis at the Vatican has sparked massive interest from news outlets and those from the LGBT community. In an astonishing statement, gays will now be accepted by the church. However, bishops will continue to honor their religious doctrines—gays will not be able to marry, but they will be accepted into the organization nonetheless. Other shocking statements regarding family life and divorces were also issued, most of which seem positive. While gay marriage won’t be considered valid under the church’s eyes, accepting homosexuals into the organization is a monumental decision and signals a radical shift in world view regarding the LGBT community.
For 2,000 years the Vatican has shunned gays and lesbians, often banning homosexuals from priesthood and calling their sexual orientation “intrinsically disordered.” But with Pope Francis’ recent statement of “Who am I to judge?” regarding the topic of homosexuality, the church has shown a major shift toward accepting gays into the church. Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle even stated that gays offered “gifts and qualities” to everyone. He invited everyone to be accepting of gays, while still supporting the doctrine of family and matrimony.
A rough draft of a synod report also indicates that those who are in their second marriage can receive Communion. The Vatican does firmly state that a marriage is between a man and a woman, and that gays who are married “are not considered on the same footing as matrimony between a man and a woman.” The church will still provide aid to children from same-sex marriages, as children shouldn’t be discriminated against because of their parents.
Hailed as a huge shift in the church, we should thank the Pope for starting this revolution. Under his leadership, the Catholic church has become much more accepting. Thank Pope Francis for his work and encourage others in the church to follow his example.
Dear Pope Francis,
The Vatican recently issued a statement that gays offered “gifts and qualities” to the church and that they should be accepted by the organization. This statement is unprecedented, especially since the church has prosecuted gays for the past 2,000 years. I for one am amazed and delighted that the church is becoming more accepting.
I hope in time your church will consider marriage between two males or two females to be no different than a marriage between a man and a woman. Both relationships can bring harmony and happiness in a household. I hope this change will happen soon, but until then, I wish to thank you for shifting the attitude of the church. Under your leadership, the Vatican has become more progressive and accepting.
