Target: Bill de Blasio, Mayor of New York City
Goal: Praise disciplinary measures for officer who knocked a teenager unconscious
After knocking a cigarette-smoking minor unconscious, two officers are currently suspended from their positions within the NYPD. One officer stopped 17-year-old Marcel Hamer on suspicion of smoking marijuana, and after confronting him, began to attack the teenager, throwing him to the ground and punching him repeatedly. The teenager was seen repeatedly telling the officer that he was smoking a cigarette, but the aggression continued despite Hamer’s pleas. The teenager was unconscious when another officer appeared to help handcuff the subject and drag him onto the curb.
The teenager’s family is pursuing a civil lawsuit against the officers, and the NYPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau is conducting an investigation. Pending the investigation, both officers have been suspended. Another officer came under investigation the same day for pepper-spraying a woman filming a police altercation.
New York mayor Bill de Blasio has taken a tough stance on the overuse of force and abuse of citizens by police, including reforming the city’s controversial stop-and-frisk program. The mayor has repeatedly criticized the use of excessive violence and racial profiling by police, vowing to improve relationships between the police and the citizens they have sworn to protect. So far, some experts and neighborhood leaders have already noticed a tangible change in the relationship between officers and civilians.
By suspending the offending officers, the NYPD will further deter the overuse of force by police, though it’s important to ensure that they follow through with disciplinary action. Sign the petition below to commend the NYPD’s punitive measures, and ask that further action is taken if the investigation uncovers misconduct.
Dear Mayor Bill de Blasio,
Two police officers were recently suspended from the NYPD for their aggressive actions against a teenager. The officers mistook the 17-year-old’s cigarette for marijuana, throwing him to the ground and punching him despite pleas from the young boy. The officers continued to assault the teenager until they knocked him unconscious, then proceeded to drag him across the ground onto the curb.
Suspending the officers enforces a refreshing anti-abuse stance, though there is much more to be done to repair the relationship between civilians and police. We, the undersigned, commend the NYPD’s actions against abusive officers, and ask that, should the investigation uncover improper conduct, further disciplinary measures are implemented.
