Target: New York Governor Andrew Cuomo
Goal: Demand the resignation of a governor who delayed and altered the results of a fracking study to help himself politically
The original draft of a federal water study commissioned by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo was altered to remove concerns about environmental and health risks, which took place after extensive communication between the U.S. Geological Survey and the Cuomo administration. The original report that contained said concerns would have been “politically inconvenient” for the Governor. His failure to approve fracking in the state would have lost him support for other energy-related initiatives, many of which have also been criticized by environmentalists.
Risks to local water supplies around areas where fracking takes place have already been well documented by environmental advocates, as well as by the citizens who’ve seen their water turn brown, become foul-smelling, and even light on fire due to the hazardous chemicals. People have already become very sick from drinking or bathing in this sludge, even though they’ve been paying for clean, usable water–something that should be considered a basic right.
Considering any level of fracking is bad enough. However, suppressing scientific results that show how fracking damages the environment and human health so that Governor Cuomo can push through a dangerous project is intolerable behavior. This sort of political sleaze that puts lives at risk should end one’s career in public office. By signing this petition, you’ll demand that New York Governor Andrew Cuomo resign from his position for the crime of putting citizens in danger of serious health problems, using dishonest means to give himself a political advantage.
Dear Governor Cuomo,
It has come to light that your administration altered and delayed a report on the environmental and health effects of your proposed fracking project because they contained concerns that would have reduced support for the idea. There were concerns about the welfare of both the environment and the humans living off of it, particularly the water supply. However, these were removed in the final draft to make a dangerous project look better.
Not only did you lie to the people of New York for political gain, you risked the health and welfare of your citizens in doing so. Fracking has been associated with extreme spikes in methane in local water supplies, making it dangerous to drink or even touch. The people of New York deserve honesty and the right to clean water that won’t send them to the hospital or give them permanent health problems. If you can’t be trusted not to lie about the results of a study that you yourself commissioned, then you can’t be trusted at all.
I demand that you immediately resign from your position as Governor of New York. Your reckless trickery is exactly the kind of political corruption that causes people to lose faith in their government, and it could potentially get people killed. You are clearly not fit to hold this kind of power. The only appropriate action for you now is to step down.
