Target: President of Mexico, Enrique Pena Nieto
Goal: Prosecute police and gang members responsible for the death of students
A mass grave containing 28 unidentified bodies in Guerrero, Mexico has led to massive outrage from citizens and government officials who believe the cite contains the bodies of several missing students. Government officials are currently investigating the matter, identifying the bodies, and finding the culprits, who many believe to be the local police and gang members. Demand that the authorities not rest until those responsible are caught and prosecuted for their crimes.
On September 26, 2014, local police forces with ties to a local gang attacked and killed six students while 43 more went missing. Federal authorities were called in to assist the students and disarm the police. The authorities are now trying to identify whether the bodies found in the mass grave are the bodies of the missing students. It is unclear what provoked the attack on these 28 people, but other events are complicating the investigation.
Upon announcing the discovery of the grave, the local gang affiliated with the attacks wrote a grim ultimatum on a banner: the 22 officers who were detained by government officials should be released immediately or consequences would soon follow. This points to the gang’s, Guerrero Unidos, involvement in the attacks on the students. “The war has started,” the banner read.
There has been a slew of incidents regarding police corruption and gang involvement in the state of Guerrero. Federal authorities should not be intimated by gang members, and instead should pursue all avenues to identify the bodies and prosecute those responsible for the murder. If the bodies are not those of the missing students, authorities should not abandon the case. Tell the President to continue looking after the wellbeing of his citizens, and bring justice to those who lost their lives and are still suffering.
Dear President Nieto,
The discovery of a mass grave has sparked outrage from a local gang that’s believed to have been involved with the incident. The gang has issued an ultimatum demanding the release of police officers and threatening dire consequences if they are not. It is imperative that as the president of Mexico, you do not heed these warnings and continue identifying the bodies and prosecuting those involved with the murder.
Families of these who lost loved ones are grieving and wish to find closure. You have a chance to lessen their suffering if investigations continue. You are responsible for their wellbeing and for bringing justice to those who were killed.
