Target: Jerry Brown, Governor of California
Goal: Thank Governor Brown for boosting California’s market for electric vehicles
California residents drive an estimated 40 percent of all electric cars driven in the U.S. according to a recent article in the New York Times. Yet, as of September 2014, Governor Jerry Brown is not stopping there, having signed several bills to help make electric vehicles more affordable for low-income residents. The long-term goal is to have at least one million zero-emission and near-zero emission vehicles by 2023.
The new legislation will provide low-income residents wanting to purchase or lease an electric car with extra credits. Governor Brown will also install charging stations for electric vehicles in low-income neighborhoods in addition to bolstering car-sharing programs. Thanks to related legislation, more electric vehicles will also now be allowed to use carpool lanes.
Governor Brown’s show of support for electric vehicles comes just days before the United Nations summit on climate change, where he is to speak alongside world leaders. The signing of these bills also marks the Governor’s most recent move toward combating climate change. Though some have called for cuts to the state’s cap-and-trade program, which allows companies to purchase emissions credits, Brown has called for its continued enforcement.
By signing the petition below, you can applaud Governor Brown’s leadership in promoting cleaner air and halting global climate change by decreasing the financial cost and increasing the availability of electric cars.
Dear Governor Brown,
I am writing to thank you for supporting the market for electric cars in California and making electric vehicles more affordable to low-income residents. Through increasing access to low-emissions forms of transportation, you are modelling how we might begin to reverse economic and environmental injustice and help the state as a whole move toward cleaner air and greater reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.
I would also like to applaud you for your continued support of the state’s cap-and-trade program, which allows companies to purchase emissions credits, despite pressure from other politicians to cut the program. Your efforts to combat climate change are truly commendable, and I thank you for putting environmental and public health at the forefront of your decisions.
By helping keep these options viable at the policy level, you are guiding the citizens of California in minimizing their carbon footprints and keeping climate change at bay. I hope that your leadership inspires other states to follow your example.
