Support Efforts to Make Books Accessible to Homeless

Target: Laura Moulton, founder of Street Books

Goal: Applaud the movement to provide books to homeless people, at no cost to them

Homelessness comes with many struggles, including having limited access to community services like libraries. A woman in Portland, Oregon, considers having no access to public libraries unacceptable, so she created a program that brings books to the homeless. Street Books is the answer to a homeless population in want of literary influence and distraction. Numerous homeless individuals in Portland have come to rely on the selfless service that is Street Books. The founder, Laura Moulton, does not let anything stand in her way of providing this service.

Street Books is a bicycle delivery program. Books are transported to different areas in town easily accessible by the homeless community and dispersed. The books are free for the taking and, just like a library system, are returned when the individuals are done reading them. Every now and then a book does not return, though this does not worry Moulton or her helpers; they understand that the homeless may have more urgent matters than returning a book on time.

Moulton has demonstrated immense drive to keep Street Books on the road, helping the less fortunate. She has stayed with the program through financial difficulty, demonstrating that a desire to better one’s community can overcome all significant barriers. Commend Moulton for her generosity, compassion and ingenuity by signing this petition.

Dear Laura Moulton,

Street Books is an amazing part of Portland’s culture. You have demonstrated immense compassion and support for the homeless community in Portland. Your project allows the less fortunate access to literature, which in turn offers an escape from reality and slice of normalcy. I thank you for your generosity.

I would also like to commend you for not allowing finances to scare you away from your project. Many people would have left the project once grant money ran out. Instead of citing the project as a one-time summer experience, you fueled the program through drive and ingenuity. Street Books is now a successful nonprofit, which offers so much to the homeless community. Books should be accessible to everyone, always. Literature is important in all walks of life, as you know and demonstrate through your work with Street Books.
