Target: Ratepayer and Community Intervenors President Carol Chock
Goal: Applaud lawsuit against plan to bail out coal plant at the expense of taxpayers
In an unfortunate and unsustainable move, the New York Public Service Commission (PSC) recently decided after a long deliberation that it would approve the repowering of the Dunkirk coal plant in Albany. The even worse news is that the PSC intends to make taxpayers responsible for this uneconomical plant’s excessive bailout, to the tune of $150 million over 10 years. In response, the Sierra Club and Ratepayer and Community Intervenors (RCI), with representation from Earthjustice, filed a lawsuit against the PSC and New York’s Department of Public Service.
Earthjustice’s petition notes that the PSC decision allows the Dunkirk coal plant to burn gas as well, putting New Yorkers’ health and environment at risk while forcing them to foot the bill for a plant that is three times larger than it should be just to reliably service its region’s grid. The costs of using fossil fuels and subsidizing unsustainable energy, combined with the potential costs of future similar decisions, are simply too high. “We can’t afford more dangerous fossil fuel pollution or the higher bills that come with it. We need Governor Cuomo to support our communities and workers in a responsible transition away from coal and gas and toward truly renewable energy sources,” commented Carol Chock, a legislator from Tompkins County and the President of RCI.
By signing this petition, you are applauding Carol Chock, RCI, and their allies for challenging the PSC decision to repower the Dunkirk plant. You are thanking them for their dedication to ending bailouts of coal plants in New York.
Dear President Carol Chock,
I am disgusted by the Public Service Commission’s recent decision to repower the Dunkirk coal plant at the expense of innocent taxpayers. New Yorkers should not be held responsible for the consequences of using outdated energy sources – all while their health and environment are being sacrificed for the sake of big coal companies. This is why I am so excited about the recent lawsuit the Sierra Club filed jointly with you and RCI against the PSC’s decision.
Thank you for calling out the blatant disregard for citizens’ health, safety, and environment that pervades this decision. Thank you for refusing to accept the government’s bow to big coal interests, and for campaigning on behalf of New Yorkers (and all Americans) for the end of coal bailouts and unsustainable, dirty energy. I hope that this case fares well for New Yorkers and sets a precedent of support for sustainable policy and renewable energy.
