End the Dolphin Slaughter in Japan

Target: Melissa Sehgal, Coordinator of Sea Shepherd

Goal: Support the conservationist group Sea Shepherd and other activists as they protest the dolphin slaughters in Japan

Each year in a small Japanese coastal town, nearly 2,000 dolphins are slaughtered. The government has done nothing to end this barbaric tradition, but instead allows the local fisherman to hunt a yearly quota of 2,000 dolphins and porpoises. The conservationist group Sea Shepherd has come to the small coastal town of Taiji to protest the dolphin slaughters for the fifth year in a row.

The barbaric techniques the fisherman employ to kill the dolphins involve metal banger poles that drive the dolphin pods into the shallow waters of the cove where they are netted. After being wrangled, the dolphin hunters hammer large metal poles into the dolphins and whales, impaling their spinal cords. Most of the time, the dolphins do not die instantly, but are left to slowly succumb to their internal injuries or drown in their own blood. The waters of the cove turn a sickly color of red with their blood.

Sea Shepherd is in Taiji for the fifth dolphin hunting season in a row, hoping to end the slaughters once and for all. Dolphins are such gentle and kind creatures and do not deserve to be killed, especially in such a barbaric manner. Sign this petition and support the Sea Shepherd conservationist group and other activists as they protest this atrocious dolphin slaughter.

Dear Melissa Sehgal,

The annual slaughter of nearly 2,000 wild dolphins is atrocious and must be ended. Dolphins are kind and gentle animals and do not deserve to be killed, especially in such a barbaric manner. I understand that it is Sea Shepherd’s fifth year in Taiji protesting the yearly slaughter. I would like to thank you and everyone else protesting this barbaric tradition.

Every year dolphins are wrangled and killed in a cove on Taiji. The techniques the fisherman employ to hunt and kill the dolphins is absolutely atrocious. Most of the time, the dolphins do not immediately die after the hunters impale their spinal cord. They are left to slowly succumb to their internal injuries or drown in their own blood. So many die that the waters of the cove turn red with their blood.

These dolphins depend on you to save them from being slaughtered since the Wakayama government is unwilling to do anything to help them. I believe that with your continued efforts and support from countless other activists, this barbaric tradition of dolphin slaughters will cease.

This practice is all the more wrong due to the dolphins being a very intelligent and trusting species. Who is the lesser evolved species here?

  2. olimpia marina says:

This idiots and criminals should be stopped NOW!!!

  3. Cary Elcome says:

Isn’t Japan supposed to be a peace-loving country? Aren’t you dog-lovers? Love your children? Respect the earth, its forests, rivers and oceans?

THEN LEAVE DOLPHINS IN PEACE!!! How did they ever harm you that you have to behave so cruelly towards them??

  4. Jason Hritz says:

I’m both disgusted and sickened knowing that this practice/sport occurs. No creature deserves this! They’re so innocent. I swam with a pod of Dolphins and I gotta say that they are the most gentle and sweet animal that I’ve ever encountered. They absolutely love human interaction, yet there lives the most brutal and evil group of cowards on earth. We need to put an end to this annual tradition and save these beautiful and loving animals. Everyone, please sign this petition and help to put a stop to these brutal murderers. Every signature will surely help. Thank you!

  5. Abbas Moghada says:

Killing such a beautiful creature is the most dirtiest inhuman behavior of Japanese .

  6. Abbas Moghadam says:

It’s time that Japan king stops against such cruel …because Japan is known for it’s culture … slaughtering innocent dolphins puts a big question against Japanese culture !!!

  7. Despina M. Andrelus says:

Abuse is the ultimate betrayal towards any living soul and absolutely heartbreaking all the way around. You simply can not do such a horrific thing without it killing the best in you. Period. If you find people happily willing to hurt an animal in any way, they are actually finding a venue to act out their deepest, most inner evil fantasies of twisted sickness. There’s nothing more revolting than that. Aside from this, it has been proven over and over again that people who have horrid intents with animals, get bored with them soon enough, ultimately leading them to bigger prey, moving up to people, in order to re-ignite and enhance the excitement that the torturing of animals used to provide. It’s simply never enough. And do not forget, these horrendous monsters also end up raising their children in “the game”, breeding evil, little sickos to continue on “the trade”… no doubt causing abuse in every level of their lives, as well. It’s just a revolting cycle that will never end until someone gets into it and breaks the heart-wrenching pattern. So, even if an animal is not of some peoples utmost concern, then note that it will not stop there. It is just a start. And it is just a matter of time.

  8. The dolphins are basically slaughtered for meat that is sent to schools for school lunches and is found being sold in fish markets. The meat is high in heavy metals and is contaminated with high levels of mercury. The Japanese claims the dolphin killing is traditional to Japan just like they have claimed that whale hunting is traditional too but that’s not true because history says that Japan during WW2 encouraged its population to eat whale meat so its not something they had done in the past. They sort out the dolphins they sell to theme parks and kill the rest. I don’t know how this can be stopped this has been documented for years the government backs the killing so they don’t care what other countries think of them they do it because they can and make money in the process. I know Sea Shepherd organization documented the slaughter for several years but the government ignored all photos and videos of the bloody slaughter.

    • even though I like the Japanese , the island as a whole will get a just DESERT from the plate movement in the sea rising and causing the fukashima disaster! they should stop the ritual of killing the sea life , and save their ISLAND, dolfins are the puppies of the sea ,they I think can help us see the problems in the ocean with a little training , I SAY SAVE THE WHALES AND DOLFINS .

  9. Ravinder singh says:

The reason Japan have so many natural calamities because they do not respect nature so in return, nature also does not want to respect them any way. You make nature suffer and in return nature give you manifold more in return.

  10. avec ces comportement l’homme va tout faire disparaitre sur la terre: aprés ça sera son tour; sans compter que les dauphins sont des animaux inoffensifs et trés sociaux

  12. I have heard Taiji, Japan’s dolphin culling described as tradition, that’s bullshit! The people are consuming dolphin meat, and not even all of what they kill. This stuff literally rots because no one will eat it! This meat is toxic, everyone knows it, so why kill?!? Because they enjoy it! It is disgusting! The only reason that this barbaric tradition exists is for the ungodly amounts of money they can fetch for the captives in sales to abusement parks! The ONLY reason! Stop giving them a motivation! Stop going to places like Slaveworld and there will no longer be a demand. #DontBuyATicket. It will take the efforts of all citizens all over the world to end this slaughter. SW is branching out, they know their days are numbered in the US so they are seeking international expansion, in countries with less governing and regulations. Everyone from every corner or the globe can put an end to this madness. We have the power to protect these innocent, sentient beings. We can stop Japan! We can stop the Faroes! We just have to work together to do it! Thank you, Sea Shepherd for your inspiration.

  14. Noraini Rosli says:

No wonder Tsunami attack Japan. Because they welcoming it. They never respect nature life..of course nature never respect them…KARMA..

  15. What sort of people take pleasure in killing innocent animals in the name of tradition? Whoever make these traditions up clearly had very barbaric tastes and certainly had no morals… Can’t you see that it is just plain WRONG!!!!

  16. Alexandre Engelen says:

Don’t say that the dolphins eat the fish man wants to consume because that is bullshit (look what man throws away and others)! And I even didn’t talk about the ecosystem being destroyed, Japanese should know as they live on an active land in perpetual motion …

  17. “So many people insist they are against animal abuse, cruelty, suffering and the inhumane treatment of animals, yet they don’t understand they are actively engaging in and supporting egregious suffering, abuse, cruelty and inhumane treatment when they eat animals and their ‘by-products.’ If you are against cruelty, suffering and inhumane treatment, then you go vegan. It’s just that simple.” – Sarah Kiser

  18. I’m going to stick my head above the parapet for a moment here. Not because I agree with the following statement (I don’t) but because I’m often amazed at how easily people condemn each other without seeing themselves properly.

    So here it is…

What would anyone here say if the japs offered to FARM dolphins and then ‘dispatch’ them in the same (non) humane way we do with our food animals?

I’d the answer is that it’s because dolphins are so intelligent then why do we assume that lack of intelligence means we sunny care about staying alive and happy?

I’m not looking for a fight. I’m just trying to understand how folks think about this in relation to their own behaviour.

I should also point out that I’m a vegan and that wilful interference with the life of ANY nonhuman for any purpose is against my beliefs.

    Appreciate anyone’s thoughts.

  19. Diane and Wolfgang Weisenberger says:

Japan sucks Whale murder, dolphin slaughter, seems Karma is against you now. I celebrate all of your disasters: typhoon, nuclear mess, flood, tornado, landslides…, I am really hoping your next disaster is a meteor strike. Yes, I hate you. And we will never give you our tourist or consumer dollars. Many feel this way – are your stubborn murderous actions worth it? There is a major price to pay – the world thinks you are an ass. You have lost face. You have lost all respect, including self-respect. Bring-on the meteors!

  20. People are retarded in this demented slaughterhouse we call earth. The mercury in the dolphin makes it brain damaging to humans, so the process cycles and continues in on itself to a further retarded end. I think Man enjoys slaughter, always has. The barbarism is hardwired in so many people. God help us all but nothing seems to have changed in a thousand years. There has been no evolving. We are devolving, esp after we elected the Hollywood actor and then later the smirking chimp. I wish these people would use their gaffes on each other, but I guess that will come.
