Success: Google Breaks Ties With Climate Deniers

Google Logo

Target: Larry Page, CEO of Google

Goal: Praise Google for cutting off support for an ultra-conservative, anti-green organization

Google has finally cut ties with the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) after urging from multiple petitions and a growing awareness of its anti-clean energy, anti-poor, anti-voting rights and general anti-progress policies. This lobbying group is earning a reputation for using its funds to fight policies that would protect the environment and reduce humanity’s carbon footprint, and large U.S. companies are starting to take notice and distance themselves. Google is one of the latest and biggest to announce its rejection of ALEC, saying that any agreement between them was a “mistake.”

ALEC has already attempted to repeal laws that encourage solar and wind power, despite their benefits to the environment and the economy. Even companies that have been criticized for their negative impact on the environment like Coca-Cola and Walmart have ditched ALEC because of the group’s ultra-right wing views and general bad press. Many were baffled by Google’s decision to sign up with the company, but thanks to petitions like the one signed by ForceChange members, they’ve corrected this oversight.

Thank Google for looking into ALEC’s policies and revoking its agreement with the group by signing this petition. The more companies that break away from ALEC, the weaker the lobbying group will be and the less damage it can do. If we stand together and keep making our voices heard through online petitions and other methods, we can make a positive impact on our world.

Dear Mr. Page,

A lot of your customers and fans were confused and distressed when they found out that you had joined up with ultra-right wing lobbying group American Legislative Exchange Council. Everyone knows that you’re a pro-green and pro-human rights company, while ALEC fights against green initiatives like solar energy credits as well as laws that ensure everyone has equal voting access and is protected from gun violence. That’s why the recent news that you’ve cut ties with ALEC is such a relief.

I thank you for reviewing this decision and fixing your mistake. Companies like yours will help to ensure that future generations can live with clean air and water, affordable and renewable energy sources, and free of devastating climate change. We need your help to stand against groups like ALEC that are only interested in profits and power concentrated into the hands of the few. Thank you for joining companies like Microsoft, Amazon, and General Motors in demonstrating that you care about the Earth and all the people on it.

  1. We need to go forward instead of burying our heads in the
sand, especially because of corporate greed.
