Target: Delaware County District Attorney John J. Whelan
Goal: Demand punishment against teacher who had sex with an underage student in his office
William Barber, a 38-year-old Pennsylvania gym teacher and father, has been charged with felony charges after students at Garnet Valley Middle School reported him for having a sexual relationship with a young female student. The relationship had been fueled by a string of text and private messages over Twitter, where Barber received nude pictures from the 15-year-old student. Court documents revealed Barber’s disturbing comments on the photos. In one of the messages he sent to the girl, he complimented how “sexy” she was, expressed how he “shouldn’t tempt [himself],” and said her “body makes [him] crazy.” These messages, which the victim gave to state troopers for evidence, were all sent the day before he sexually assaulted the girl in his office after football practice.
The Delco Daily Times reports that Barber initially met the victim when she was only an eighth-grader in his gym class, but their sexual relationship did not begin until recently. Superintendent Marc Bertrando lamented that the situation is difficult for the entire school community and also said that Barber’s “school keys and access card were confiscated.” The school has since excluded Barber from its staff page and he is currently placed on administrative leave. Since the incident, the school district has organized a team of counselors and therapists to talk with staff and students.
Please sign this petition to ensure that William Barber is punished for sexually assaulting a minor.
Dear John J. Whelan,
William Barber, a gym teacher from Garnet Valley Middle School, was recently arrested for having sex with a 15-year-old female student but was released shortly afterward on bond. He needs to be punished for his crimes and be fired from his job so that he cannot harm any other students. A teacher should be protecting his students, not soliciting them for sex and putting them in harm’s way.
Many people are blaming the girl for “tempting” Barber into having sex, but she is a minor and therefore unable to give consent. Victim-blaming needs to be stopped. Barber is a grown adult and should have had the sense not to take advantage of a minor.
I am urging you to ensure that Barber will not be given another opportunity to prey on students. He deserves the harshest sentence that the law will allow.
