Denounce Woman for Hiding Infant in Car Trunk

Target: Broward County Sheriff’s Office

Goal: Prosecute Florida mother for locking her infant in the truck of her vehicle

Breona Synclair Watkins, a 19-year-old mother from Florida, was caught by authorities for reportedly stuffing her five-month-old baby in the trunk of her car. According to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, the baby was heard crying in the trunk of Watkin’s sedan after an early morning traffic stop. When the trunk was opened, the baby was found lying on top of metal shears, a rusty metal clothes hanger, a plastic CD case and a large, rusted tire iron. Other hazardous materials found along with the child include a used gas can, a fuel pump, and plastic bags. Any of these items could have caused serious injuries.

Police have discovered that Watkins told a 14-year-old girl riding in the passenger seat to hide the baby in the trunk through an opening in the backseat after she was pulled over for a missing headlight and running a red light. It seems as though Watkins did not want to get an additional ticket for failing to provide a car seat for her baby. Before being pulled over, the baby had been sitting on the passenger’s lap.

Watkins has been charged for child abuse without great bodily harm, obstruction without violence, and operating a vehicle without a valid driver’s license and a child restraint. Currently, she is being held on a $7,000 bond.

Please sign this petition to demand that Breona Synclair Watkins be punished to the full extent of the law for placing her baby in the trunk of her car and for not providing her baby with a car seat.

Dear Broward County Sheriff’s Office,

Is it shocking to me that Breona Synclair Watkins would endanger her child’s life by failing to provide them with a suitable car seat, and even more so, that she would place her child in the trunk of a car just to avoid a ticket. Her child was found lying on top of several dangerous materials including cutting shears, a gas can and fuel pump, and a metal clothes hanger. These items had the potential to seriously harm her baby, but apparently avoiding a ticket was her biggest concern.

Watkins’ actions were irresponsible and completely ridiculous. A mother should do her best to protect her child, not put them in harm’s way. I can only hope that the Sheriff’s Office will ensure she is prosecuted to the full extend of the law, and that this helps her to learn from her mistakes.
