Target: Dr. David Copeland, Madison County School District Superintendent
Goal: Expel teacher’s aide who used a special needs student to trap a known sexual predator within the school
A young female student was subject to an alleged sexual assault in a Madison County, Alabama school when a teacher’s aide instructed her to lure a male student into a bathroom so that he could be caught in the act of sexual harassment. This boy was well known for asking girls to have sex with him in school bathrooms and had already been accused of sexually harassing the girl who was used as bait several times. When the plan went wrong and the girl lured him into the wrong bathroom, the aide simply left the school after neither student showed at the expected area. The special needs student alleges that she was raped by the boy as a result.
Although the teacher’s aide, June Simpson, admitted to using a student as bait for a predator, nothing has been done to punish this extremely dangerous and negligent behavior. Not one staff member has seen any sort of consequence or expressed any regret for putting a vulnerable young child in extreme danger and possibly getting her raped. Instead, Simpson said that if anything happened, it must have been consensual. This in spite of the fact that multiple students had complained of non-consensual sexual harassment from the boy.
It is beyond irresponsible and inappropriate to use a child as bait for any person who has been accused multiple times of engaging in predatory behavior. This girl may very well have suffered a horrible trauma, and the staff member who used her won’t even admit responsibility for putting her in danger. Please sign this petition to demand that June Simpson be fired for gross misconduct before any more children are put into dangerous situations.
Dear Dr. Copeland,
As superintendent of a school district, it’s your primary duty to ensure the safety and well-being of the children within the school walls. Unfortunately, one of your students was put into grave danger by a teacher’s aide under employment within your district. June Simpson used a special needs child to try and bait a male student who had been repeatedly accused of inappropriate sexual behavior, sexual harassment, and sexual assault. When the two students ended up in the wrong bathroom, the young girl was left alone and may have been raped by the boy while Simpson went home rather than looking for them.
Regardless of what happened in the bathroom, this staff member put an extremely vulnerable child into a situation where she was trapped in a room with a possible sexual predator. This gross negligence and inappropriate conduct should not go unpunished. I understand that there have so far been zero consequences for Simpsons’ actions, and this is completely unacceptable.
Allowing the staff member to continue working in your school sends the message that putting a child in this kind of danger is acceptable conduct and that you don’t care about the safety of your students. I demand that you immediately fire June Simpson for the sake of the student who was used as bait as well as for the safety of all the other students under this person’s care. Failure to do so could easily result in the harm of more vulnerable kids.
