Target: Michele Raffin
Goal: Thank woman for caring for rescued birds and helping save rare birds from extinction
When Michele Raffin stopped to rescue an injured white dove lying by the side of the road, she had no idea that moment would launch a new career and transform her approach to life and love. In no time, she developed a reputation within the Northern California birding community as compassionate and generous, and shelter managers and breeders started going to her with troubled birds or extras from their flock. Whether the birds were injured, sick, or emotionally distressed, Haffin took them in all the same, even as her own family had to make room for them. At her own expense, she saw to it that the birds received veterinary care. Knowing that many bird species live their entire lives in pairs, she found the birds mates to support their health and happiness.
Today, her own house is home to the non-profit organization she created called Pandemonium Aviaries. The compound’s innovative design features 35 aviaries built around Ms. Raffin’s home in Los Altos, California and speaks to the mission of Ms. Raffin and her staff—providing a space for the birds to fly, heal, breathe fresh air, and enjoy a clean, stimulating environment that is as beautiful as they are. The bird sanctuary provides life-long care for hundreds of rescued birds.
Through conservation breeding, Pandemonium is also working to ensure the survival of six endangered species originating from New Guinea and the Philippines, many of which are threatened by habitat destruction and targeted for their colorful plumage. These include Bartlett’s and Luzon’s bleeding heart doves, green-naped pheasant pigeons, nicobar pigeons, and blue and Victoria crowned pigeons. By partnering with conservation experts and organizations, Pandemonium gives the birds the species-specific attention they require before they are able to be returned to their native habitat.
Please sign the petition below to thank Ms. Haffin and her staff for helping us appreciate birds and dedicating their lives to saving them.
