Success: State’s Groundwater Sources Protected from Overuse

Target: California Governor Jerry Brown

Goal: Thank the governor protecting California’s groundwater sources from overuse

A severe problem has arisen in California, posing a large threat to the environment and the people who live there. The drought that has plagued the state is now at its most intense and has reduced the amount of water being supplied from above ground sources to an all-time low. This means that people are unable to use water found in rivers, lakes and other above-ground sources. Since they have been unable to use these sources of water, people have turned to drafting groundwater. The difference between these two water sources is that above groundwater use is regulated by law while groundwater usage was not. Without regulation people could use as much  groundwater as they want, which in turn makes the drought worse by taking unsustainable amounts of water from the ground. This means that the groundwater would not be able to replenish itself and California would dry up even faster.

The California State Senate, however, realized that this was a huge problem. They proposed a three-part bill, which was eventually passed through to Governor Jerry Brown’s desk. It was vital that the governor signed this bill into law in order to protect California’s environment and residents. This important issue could not be left to chance, so a petition was issued on the ForceChange website urging Governor Brown to support and sign this bill.

It has since been announced that the governor has approved and signed the bill into law. Now the use of groundwater is protected by the bill, which compels water-basin managers in certain places to create plans to protect against the overdrafting of groundwater. The state would then review these plans and reserve the power to act if these plans are not prepared or enforced by the landowner. Thank Governor Jerry Brown and tell him he did the right thing by signing this crucial bill into law.

Dear Governor Jerry Brown,

Thank you for your support of the groundwater regulation bill that was placed on your desk. By signing this bill into law you have done your duty to protect the environment and people of California from long-term devastation.

The protection of groundwater is very important for the state of California. As the drought continues to dry out the state, people need to be prevented from making the problem worse by overdrafting groundwater. Without these regulations, people not thinking about future consequences could pull unsustainable amounts of water from underground sources making the drought worse. Thanks to you, this risk has been alleviated, and the environment and people of California are safe from this threat.
