Shut Down Incinerator for Harmful Illegal Emissions

Smokestacks, incinerator

Target: Governor of Utah, Gary Herbert

Goal: Close a medical waste facility notorious for its polluting incinerator

A recent video reveals that a Utah medical waste facility has been illegally incinerating materials while emitting toxic levels of harmful, cancer-causing pollutants into the air. This is Stericycle’s second emissions violation: The company was already found guilty of doctoring emission records after burning through the accepted threshold. Action must be taken to shut down Stericycle and protect this Utah community from more pollution and disease.

When construction of Stericycle was first proposed in the area of North Salt Lake, legislation did not allow any residents within one mile of the facility. As the years went by, more and more development resulted in residential areas literally neighboring the plant. Stericycle’s incinerator emits as many hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) as a coal-fired power plant, putting the local community at risk for health and behavioral problems ranging in severity from cancer to autism to dyslexia. As Utah already has the highest rate of autism in the nation, this contaminating incinerator must be shut down.

The facility disposed of a variety of medical supplies, infectious animal and human waste, and contaminated municipal waste. Stericycle now plans to move its facility to another location further from residential areas. However, the incinerator will still burn toxins that negatively impact Utah’s air quality. Under its current permit, the facility is allowed to emit 30 pounds of lead, 60 pounds of mercury, and 912 pounds of chlorine into the atmosphere each year. Considering its past infractions, it’s not unreasonable to suspect that Stericycle might try to bypass emissions laws once again at its new location.

Locals want the plant shut down completely, much like many incinerators in the U.S. Nearly 98 percent of medical waste incinerators have closed in the past 15 years. By signing this petition, you are urging the Governor of Utah to close the facility forever, protecting Utah’s air and citizens.

Dear Governor Herbert,

The Stericycle Medical Waste Management facility has polluted and infected Utah long enough. From doctored emission records to pounds of hazardous air pollutants, this medical waste incinerator cannot be trusted. The facility emits as much hazardous air pollution as a coal-fired power plant. With high rates of autism and cancer in subjects near incinerators, Utah’s citizens are at risk.

Please take action now to close down Stericycle. Protect Utah’s citizens from disease and the environment from harmful air pollution.
