Success: Gap Bans Sale of Angora Rabbit Fur

Target: Glenn Murphy, CEO of Gap Inc.

Goal: Commend Gap for banning the use of angora rabbit fur in their products

Recently, an undercover investigation of angora rabbit fur farms in China produced highly alarming video footage of how the fur farmers operate. The video shows that the angora rabbits have their fur ruthlessly yanked from their sensitive skin eliciting heart-wrenching screams and leaving them unable to move, eat, or drink for hours. These poor rabbits are forced to endure this horrifying ordeal every three months for up to five years. After the fur farmers are done with them, they are carelessly hung upside down and have their throats slit.

In China, where 90 percent of the world’s angora fur is harvested, there are no penalties for animal abuse of any kind and no regulations on fur farms. This means that the only way this horrible treatment of angora rabbits can be stopped is if all companies that buy the fur ban it instead. Many retail stores have committed themselves to banning angora fur in their clothing products. Gap was behind the times–they had suspended angora until further investigation but had refused to ban it. A previous ForceChange petition called on Gap to stop using angora rabbit fur in their products. What further investigation could be needed besides the video showing how the rabbits’ fur is ripped out?

Gap has at last decided to ban angora fur completely and committed to never selling anymore angora fur products. Gap is a retail giant, the parent company of Athleta, Banana Republic, Piperlime, and Old Navy. Their decision to ban angora rabbit fur from their products is a victory for animal rights and another step towards the angora fur farm industry’s downfall. Thank Gap Inc. for committing to this important ban.

Dear Mr. Murphy,

Your decision to ban angora rabbit fur from your products is very commendable. As I am sure you know now, angora rabbits are subjected to horrible torture in order to obtain their precious fur. This torture occurs every three months for up to five years, making these poor rabbits’ lives a living hell until they are unceremoniously slaughtered when they’ve been used up.

In light of this shocking evidence, many retailers have committed to banning angora fur and it is heartening to see that Gap has done the same. With the amount of cruelty-free fabrics available today, there is no excuse for the use of horrendously acquired furs such as angora fur.

Thank you for banning angora rabbit fur from your products completely and committing to cruelty-free clothing.
