Target: CEO of Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, James H. Morgan & CEO of Dunkin’ Donuts, Nigel Travis
Goal: Praise popular doughnut companies for switching to sustainable palm oil
Palm oil is a cheap oil that is massively produced around the world, and it’s in almost everything. Unfortunately, this cheap product comes at a steep price. Orangutans and tigers are losing their habitats, and it’s destroying the fertile, carbon-rich peatlands. After consumers were educated about the plight of these animals, the two biggest doughnut companies pledged to only use 100 percent sustainable palm oil.
It is thanks to consumers that both of these companies made this switch, and the move is being praised by both consumers and scientists alike. Krispy Kreme Doughnuts will be making the switch in 2016 once it has sorted out the process with its suppliers. Dunkin’ Donuts also stated that it will be switching to only sustainable oil in the same year.
Indonesia and Malaysia produces the most palm oil, accounting for 85 percent of the world’s oil. According to the United Nations, palm oil is the leading cause for deforestation in both of these countries, leading to massive sparse areas devoid of trees. And according to the Orangutan Project, as much as 300 soccer fields of forest are destroyed every hour. Consumers have become aware of the problem and are pushing for massive companies to use sustainable palm oil.

Dear James H. Morgan and Nigel Travis,
Recently, both of your companies announced that they will be using only sustainable palm oil, a move that I wholeheartedly support. The sole reason that many of our animals are disappearing from the planet is due to habitat loss, which is often a result of irresponsible human actions. The clear-cutting of rainforests for palm oil disgusts me, and I am thrilled that your companies have realized the disastrous impact that this destruction has on our environment and have vowed to use only sustainable palm oil within the next two years.
The lives of animals shouldn’t be threatened because we want a tasty fried treat, nor should they lose their lives for other such foods and commodities. In the future, I hope you will continue to make environmentally sound decisions that will preserve and protect our environment for generations to come.
