Target: Premier of Tasmania Will Hodgman
Goal: Stop the logging of rare forests in Tasmania
Several years ago, the environmentalists of Tasmania protested the logging of their precious old-growth forests. The logging industry and the environmentalists were at odds for years, where activists and loggers alike were injured in the crossfire. In the end, the activists won and protection was granted to the rare forests of Tasmania. However, with a new liberal government in power, these protections have been removed. These forests have been designated for logging in the next few years. Stop the destruction of our environment, as trees are crucial to the livelihood of the planet.
Environmentalists fought tooth and nail to garner protection for their beloved Tasmania forests. Loggers would find feces in their helmets, urine in the billy, or dung rubbed onto the handles of the machines. For three years, environmentalists fought off the logging industry until protections were finally erected for the trees. However, these protections have been violated as the Premier of Tasmania opens up logging in the forest to create jobs.
The Premier of Tasmania, Will Hodgman, says that the country shouldn’t feel “ashamed” if citizens want to use the forest as an economic resource, and feels that this action is justifiable. The Tasmania government has set aside 400,000 hectares from the forest reserve, where it will be used for logging efforts in the next six years. Another 1.1 million hectares is already being used by the logging industry for “specialty” wood. Some of Australia’s oldest trees, such as myrtle, sassasfras, and huon pine will be cut down for profits.
Furthermore, the government is drafting laws to silence environmental protesters. Any protesters that stop businesses from operating or obstruct work sites will be fined or placed in jail. It is frustrating that the Tasmania government would sanction logging, especially in a forest reserve. The government knows that forests are crucial for life on earth and for removing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Urge Premier Will Hodgman to stop the logging immediately.
Dear Premier Will Hodgman,
Several years ago, the people of Tasmania protested against loggers who wanted to cut down their rare and precious forests. These forests contain some of Australia’s oldest trees and you are willing to cut them down? Trees are responsible for producing the oxygen we breathe, providing homes for animals, and for removing dangerous greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The environmentalists have fought hard for these protections and you are doing them a disservice.
I am writing this letter urging you to stop the logging efforts. The Tasmanian Forests are part of a reserve and should not be cut down. As the leader of Tasmania, you should place more value in your forests instead of seeing them as a way to earn money.
