Applaud Animal Shelter for Saving Police Dog

German shepherd

Target: Coffeyville Friends of Animals Shelter and Adoption Center

Goal: Commend animal shelter staff for properly diagnosing and caring for an elderly, surrendered police dog

Controversy has been circulating around the nation’s military and police dogs. Many question the quality of life the dogs receive after their service, and movements are being made to ensure the dogs’ remaining life is happy and loving. However, not all police officers or military personnel have service dogs’ best interests at heart. In fact, many are not opposed to dumping the dog in a shelter or on the street if its use is spent. Recently, an elderly German shepherd was left at Coffeyville Friends of Animals Shelter and Adoption Center by its policeman counterpart because the dog was believed to have cancer.

After closer examination of the gorgeous, well-behaved dog, the shelter staff concluded that the dog had thyroid problems, not cancer. The staff has the dog on antibiotics with expectations that the shepherd will live much longer. The shelter is attempting to find the shepherd a forever home in hopes that the beautiful animal does not have to be put to sleep due to lack of human interest.

While the shelter still has rules to uphold in terms of saving the animal’s life, the staff has already gone above and beyond to find the shepherd a forever home. Commend the shelter staff for confirming the dog’s existing health issues and giving it a solid chance of finding a forever home.

Dear Coffeyville Friends of Animals Shelter and Adoption Center Staff,

I am writing to thank you for your immense compassion shown to the surrendered police dog in your care. It was not required of you to further explore the dog’s health issues, but you did so in order to ensure that he is adoptable and healthy. Thank you for controlling his thyroid issues by issuing him antibiotics. While I understand that these actions do not guarantee that the shepherd will find a loving forever home, his chances are now much higher thanks to the dedication of your staff.

My hopes are that the dog will find a forever home so he may live out the rest of his time in peace and happiness. Thank you for doing all that you can to make this a reality.
