Target: The Young Turks Directors Jesus Godoy and Mark Register
Goal: Remove repulsive YouTube video that praises rapist’s actions
The Young Turks, a well-known news channel on YouTube, recently uploaded a segment about a man from Mumbai who petitioned for divorce from his allegedly sexually abusive wife. The channel’s four panelists spent the duration of the video laughing at the victim and praising the abusive wife who used substances to manipulate him into having sex. Urge the show’s directors to remove this repulsive video that perpetuates harmful cultural stereotypes about men and male sexuality.
During the video, two of the male panelists gave the impression that all men should want sex all the time and the victim in the story is wrong for refusing his wife. They failed to acknowledge the fact that the man’s wife had been forcing him to consume “medication” and liquor in order to pressure him into having sex. The wife often forced him into having sex, and despite his efforts to resist, she would abuse him until he succumbed to her demands.
During the segment, main host and panelist Cenk Uygur calls the rapist an “Indian hero” and even suggests that she should be “given a medal.” The other panelists, Ana Kasparian, Ben Mankiewicz, and Wes Clark Jr., follow his lead and laugh while joking about the man’s systematic abuse. They fail to acknowledge the horrific realities of sexual abuse perpetrated against men. Male victims often face not only physical and mental torture at the hands of their abusers but also the hatred and scorn of a world deeply entrenched in harmful stereotypical beliefs and assumptions about masculinity.
Please sign this petition to demand that the Young Turks remove this offensive video that praises rape, makes light of the victim’s abuse, and spreads ignorance about the atrocities of male sexual abuse.
Dear Jesus Godoy and Mark Register,
A recent Young Turks video that discusses a Mumbai man’s sexual abuse at the hands of his wife was poorly handled. Laughing and mocking another person’s rape is disgusting and should never have been aired on your channel. There is absolutely no reason for shaming a victim for his sexual abuse. Male sexual assault is underreported and largely unacknowledged as a result of lingering, archaic ideas about male sexuality. Male victims are routinely silenced and blamed for their own abuse.
This offensive video is only the latest in a cultural narrative that ignores male victims of sexual assault. The responses by the panelists were incredibly inappropriate and only perpetuate harmful views about rape. Rape is never something to joke about. Gender does not change that.
Your news channel should be standing up against rape, not condoning it or allowing a certain gender to get away with it. The abused man has already experienced enough shame and trauma. I urge you to remove this heinous video from your channel immediately.
