Target: U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder
Goal: Demand a federal civil rights investigation into fatal police shooting
John Crawford III, a father of two, was fatally shot by police while he was shopping at a southwestern Ohio Walmart store. When the shooting took place, Crawford was talking to LeeCee Johnson, the mother of his children, on his cell phone. After the family viewed the Walmart surveillance footage, it was clear that Crawford was not doing anything wrong. He had picked up a toy rifle in the store and was holding it with the barrel pointed at the floor before he was shot on sight by policemen, who did not give him time to put down the toy.
Now, Crawford’s grieving family is calling upon the U.S. Justice Department to open a civil rights investigation into this needless police shooting. They are also demanding Ohio State Attorney General Mike DeWine to release the video footage from Walmart that shows the senseless murder, especially since authorities have already released other essential recordings like the 911 call and police dash camera footage. The family fears that the investigation’s unusually slow pace indicates that the state of Ohio is intentionally stalling progress. Additionally, the grand jury’s meeting, which was previously scheduled on a specific date, has been postponed to a much later date. Sergeant David Darkow, one of the two policemen involved in the fatal shooting, has already returned to active duty. The other officer, Sean Williams, had previously been involved in a fatal shooting in 2010 but was never prosecuted.
Please sign this petition to urge Attorney General Eric Holder to launch a federal investigation into John Crawford III’s racially motivated death. The two officers responsible for this act of murder need to be prosecuted and held accountable for their crime.
Dear Attorney General Eric Holder,
John Crawford III was fatally shot by Sergeants David Darkow and Sean Williams while he was shopping at a Walmart in Ohio. There was no need for either officer to shoot Crawford, since he was not posing a threat but merely holding a toy gun when the shooting took place. It’s clear that the officers in question considered John Crawford III to be a threat simply because he was not white.
Video footage from the scene showed that Crawford did not do anything wrong. I ask that you formerly launch a federal investigation into Crawford’s senseless murder, which will provide a transparent and fair review of the facts of the fatal shooting. Do not let the officers get away with their crime. John Crawford III deserves justice.
