Target: Ryan Saari, Director of the Oregon Public House
Goal: Applaud entrepreneur for starting the world’s first nonprofit pub for charity
Wouldn’t it be nice if all the money people spent going out for food and beer went to a good cause? Ryan Saari, the Director of the Oregon Public House, came up with a way to do just that in the city of Portland, Oregon.
Portland is a city that prides itself on an extensive selection of craft beer breweries and unique culinary specialties. The Oregon Public House, which is the first nonprofit pub in the world, fits right in with that culture. This pub is devoted to donating 100 percent of the proceeds from food and drink to a charity of the patron’s choice. “More people will want to support your business than if you’re just doing it to pay for your second home,” Saari explained.
The Oregon Public House partners with a wide range of charities that work in the fields of social justice and community and environmental needs. The charities are responsible for bringing in volunteers to work at the pub when the organization is being featured, meet fundraising goals, and handle promotions.
Recently supported charities include Braking Cycles, a local youth outreach program, and the Red Sweater Project, a nonprofit that assists children in Tanzania. While positioning itself as the “fundraising department” for charitable organizations, it is also providing the local community with great food and beer in a friendly environment. Sign the below petition to thank Saari and his fellow entrepreneurs for turning a simple meal and drinks into so much more.
Dear Mr. Saari,
Thank you for following through on your vision to create the world’s first nonprofit brew pub. Your dedication to be completely volunteer-run and donate 100 percent of the profits to charity is commendable. The Oregon Public House has already helped many local and global charities, but of course there is much more work to be done.
I am urging you to work with other local businesses to promote your charitable events and scrutinize the goals and projected outcomes of charities that apply to be featured in your pub. A nonprofit pub is a wonderful idea that needs to catch on throughout cities across America and around the world. By bridging the gap between going out for a good time and donating to charity, philanthropy takes on a whole new meaning.
