Demand Justice for Victim of Officer’s Reckless Driving

Target: U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder

Goal: Demand justice for man killed by NYPD cruiser

Last year, 24-year-old Ryo Oyamada was struck and killed by an NYPD cruiser while he was crossing the street. The NYPD has allegedly gone to great lengths to cover up the crime by manipulating video footage of the incident and refusing to charge the officer responsible for the tragic death. Urge U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to launch a thorough investigation into the incident to ensure justice for Oyamada’s family.

Although the NYPD claims that the cruiser’s lights and siren were on before the collision took place, many witnesses have stepped forward to state the opposite. Video footage of the accident shows that the cruiser was being driven over 70 miles-per-hour down a residential street without the siren lights on, prompting many to believe that the NYPD is covering up the incident. This footage was initially withheld by the NYPD, who also refused to release the officer’s name. But after they did agree to show the video, the footage appeared to be altered to corroborate their version of events. Evidence from the NY Housing Authority refutes the NYPD’s claims and shows that someone made a great attempt to distort the truth.

The entire investigation of the scene was poorly handled from the start. None of the eyewitnesses were interviewed for the police report, officers on the scene did not measure the cruiser’s skid marks on the road, and they did not retrieve information from the cruiser’s data recorder before it was eventually erased. Additionally, Darren Ilardi, the officer responsible for the fatal collision, claimed to be responding to a 911 call for a knife assault. His excuse was later discovered to be false. Radio transcripts provided by the city prove that Officer Ilardi was not even assigned to the knife assault call and that two other NYPD units had already been dispatched to answer it.

Please sign this petition to demand that the Department of Justice enact a thorough investigation into Ryo Oyamanda’s death. Do not let the NYPD get away with its cover-up.

Dear Eric Holder,

Last year, an NYPD cruiser struck and killed a pedestrian in Queens. The way that the NYPD handled the investigation of Ryo Oyamada’s death is shocking and disgusting. I urge the Department of Justice to launch a thorough investigation into this tragic incident and hold the officer and the NYPD responsible for their reprehensible actions.

Although the NYPD claims that the cruiser hit Oyamada with its sirens on, eyewitnesses and video footage clearly show that the officer was lying. None of the witnesses were interviewed, the scene of the crime was not properly documented, and when the NYPD eventually released the “video footage” of the accident, it had been heavily edited to corroborate their story. The fact that the NYPD values covering for their own more than an innocent civilian is outrageous. They should be protecting the community. Please conduct a fair investigation into Ryo Oyamada’s death. Do not let this case be swept under the rug. He deserves justice.
