Stop Using Live Animals as Shooting Targets

Target: Pennsylvania State Representative John Maher

Goal: Praise efforts to outlaw shooting live animal targets

The state of Pennsylvania is currently considering improving their animal protection legislation by introducing a bill that would protect live animals from being used as targets. The bill, if passed, would also outlaw the slaughter and sale of domestic animals such as dogs and cats for human consumption. The bill passed the State House with overwhelming support and will soon enter the Senate for a vote.

Some advocates are shocked that there is already no legislation against these types of cruel acts, including Bob Barker, host of well-known game show The Price is Right. The celebrity has teamed up with international advocacy group Showing Animals Respect and Kindness, or SHARK, to create a commercial informing citizens of the bill.

The bill seeks to outlaw “pigeon shoots,” competition events where people shoot captive pigeons as they are released from cages or boxes. Oftentimes, birds are not killed by the shots, and are left to suffer in “dead piles” for hours or even days before death. There are some that even travel in from out-of-state to attend these competitions, as these types of cruelty are outlawed in almost every other US state.

Laws to prohibit such blatant forms of animal cruelty are long overdue in the state of Pennsylvania. It is good to see such support for the new animal protection laws, though it is important that continued support sees the bill to passing. Your signature will applaud the creators of the bill and ask them to do everything possible to ensure that it comes into law.

Dear Rep. John Maher,

A bill to outlaw the use of live animals as targets has passed the State House in Pennsylvania. The bill would put an end to pigeon shoots, competitive events during which captive pigeons are released from boxes before being shot out of the sky. The bill would also prohibit the slaughter, processing, and sale of dogs and cats for food.

These types of restrictions on animal cruelty are long overdue for the state of Pennsylvania, where visitors from neighboring states have been known to visit to participate in pigeon shoots. I applaud your efforts to put an end to these barbaric and outdated acts of cruelty, and ask for your continues effort to see that the bill is passed into law.

Pennsylvania’s shame. (Born and raised there.)

  4. I can’t believe this sort of things goes on in a supposedly civilised country like the US. What the heck is wrong with people? No wonder I only support animal, conservation and environmental organisations.

  5. OMG…did I read this right??? These cruel and barbaric acts towards pigeons, dogs and cats is taking place in Pennsylvania?!?!? How disgusting and inhumane! I know these cruel and barbaric acts take place in Asia (and that’s another battle), but now to discover it’s happening in the United States is disgusting and unbelievable! I thought we had progressed and become a civilized society, it’s quite obvious that Pennsylvania has not progressed past the prehistoric ages!!!

“So many people insist they are against animal abuse, cruelty, suffering and the inhumane treatment of animals, yet they don’t understand they are actively engaging in and supporting egregious suffering, abuse, cruelty and inhumane treatment when they eat animals and their ‘by-products.’ If you are against cruelty, suffering and inhumane treatment, then you go vegan. It’s just that simple.” – Sarah Kiser

Speak out against animal abuse and cruelty no matter where you see it or who is doing it.

If your neighbor is hurting or neglecting their “pets” – report them to animal control – after first warning them.

I think one of the things that bothers me the most is to see dogs being walked in the HOT NM sun when it’s in the 80’s and 90’s with NO WATER. Their clueless owners let their dogs foot pads burn on the hot pavement; they fail to bring a water bowl with a container of cold water to stop and give some to their dog – and a WATER SPRITZER bottle of cold water (a plant sprayer bottle was what we spritzed our dog with). When I see the dog’s tongue hanging way out and her/ his brain being fried in the hot sun (and I see this practically daily by people who actually think that they are being good responsible dog owners just because they are walking their dog) it sickens me. I often stop my car and yell out – “Your dog is boiling hot – give your dog some cold water now.” The dog owners just stop and look at me like I am some crazy lunatic interfering in their walk with their dog.

So if you are one of those people – know this: That a dog’s body temperature is hotter than humans AND they are wearing a fur coat. You are not. You are probably wearing a T-shirt, so please get a clue. Also, the dog has no voice. So you must be smart enough to realize that if it’s hot enough for humans to walk around carrying a water bottle – then it certainly is hot enough to carry one for your dog. And don’t forget to pour some cold water on your dog’s head. Even better – spray your dog down with cold water from a hose, right before walking your dog on a hot day (which I would not recommend anyway – but if you must).
