Target: Defense Secretary Leon Panetta
Goal: To urge the U.S. military to conduct a thorough investigation into the brutal beating of a sheep by military personnel.
Recently, a video began circulating on the Internet about U.S. military personnel brutally beating a sheep with a metal bat. This horrendous act of cruelty against a helpless animal happened in Afghanistan in November. A child was present and watched the entire incident unfold. The military personnel were filmed dragging the sheep into a room and repeatedly striking the animal on its head and neck with a metal baseball bat unless it fell down convulsing. The military personnel were laughing and cheering each time the sheep was struck.
On December 13th, an animal welfare organization, In Defense of Animals filed an official complaint with the Secretary of Defense citing this horrible act of cruelty and demanding a full investigation of the incident. Army investigators now believe that the service members seen in the video are airmen and not soldiers, and have handed the case over to Air Force authorities.
Military officials said the uniforms of the men in the video appear to be that of airmen serving in Afghanistan, and not the standard Army uniform. The Air Force Office of Special Investigations has taken over the case now, and is looking into whether any of its personnel were involved. We do not know how long this investigation will take, or even whether the perpetrators will be brought to justice. We do know that such horrific acts of violence against innocent animals should not be permitted.
Please petition Secretary Panetta to conduct a thorough investigation and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Dear Secretary Panetta,
I was shocked to see a video of the brutal beating of a helpless sheep with a baseball bat by U. S. military personnel in Afghanistan. This November 2011 incident has circulated around the internet, tarnishing the reputation of the U.S. Defense Department. The video shows a child looking on and several other military personnel laughing and supporting the beating. It took 12 blows with the sheep convulsing and several attempts at escape before the poor animal finally died. As you already know, In Defense of Animals has already filed a formal complaint and asked for a full investigation.
This is not the first instance of animal cruelty perpetrated by U.S. military personnel caught on video. Marine David Motari was filmed throwing a puppy over a cliff in Iraq in a 2008 video. This violent and senseless act eventually led to his discharge from military duty.
There is clear scientific documentation showing that people who abuse animals are also a danger to other people. Violent acts towards animals are often precursors to domestic violence, sexual violence, and murder. Prosecuting animal mistreatment carried out by military personnel is an important step towards preventing and reducing the risk of violent incidents to other military personnel and civilians as well as their spouses, children, friends and neighbors.
Please conduct a comprehensive investigation into this incident and ensure that the perpetrators are punished to the fullest extent of the law.
