Target: Carnival Cruise Lines CEO Gerry Cahill
Goal: Demand cruise line stops polluting the ocean by installing advanced sewage treatment systems in its ships
Out of every cruise line, Carnival Cruises has constantly been the biggest culprit for polluting the ocean. Twenty-two of the company’s ships are currently using 30-year-old sewage treatment technology, which are not up to par with current water quality standards as laid out by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
When tested, these systems have been shown to leave behind significant amounts of fecal bacteria, heavy metals and nutrients. The levels of these harmful by products of the sewage system are in excess of the water quality standards set by the EPA and are contaminating the waters in which the ships sail.
However, these outdated sewer systems are not the only way Carnival Cruise Lines is polluting the environment. Recently, Carnival Cruises announced its intentions to leave the Baltimore port and move the Carnival Pride ship to Florida. The ship used to port in Florida, but the move back to its original home is for a devious and horrible reason. The new, life-saving air quality standards now implemented in Baltimore would require Carnival Cruises to use cleaner fuels. By sailing from Florida instead, Carnival can continue to burn more cheap “bunker fuel.” This fuel is 2,000 times dirtier than the diesel fuel sold at regular gas stations.
On top of this, according to the New York Times report by David Leonhardt, “Over the last five years, the company [Carnival Corp.] has paid total corporate taxes—federal, state, local and foreign—equal to only 1.1 percent of its cumulative $11.3 billion in profits.” Carnival has the means to convert to new sewage treatment systems and to use a cleaner source of energy but chose not to because of greed. Carnival Cruise Lines has no excuse for the damage it is inflicting upon the environment except its lack of decency in order to earn a few more dollars. Tell Carnival this behavior is unacceptable and needs to be corrected.
Dear Mr. Cahill,
Carnival Cruise Lines is a bane on the environment. The sewage treatment systems on your ships are not up to par with the current water quality standards as laid out by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. The water tested from these ships have significant amounts of fecal bacteria and heavy metals. The levels of these harmful by products are in excess of the water quality standards set by the EPA and are contaminating the waters in which your ships sail.
Your decision to move “Carnival Pride” from the port of Baltimore to Florida is purely to avoid having to change to a cleaner fuel. The “bunker fuel” you use is 2,000 times dirtier than diesel gas being sold at gas stations. By burning mass amounts of this disgusting fuel, you are polluting the atmosphere as well as the ocean. This pollution causes significant harm to the environment only so you can save a few dollars.
The worst part is you do not even need to save money. According to the New York Times report by David Leonhardt “Over the last five years, the company [Carnival Corp.] has paid total corporate taxes — federal, state, local and foreign — equal to only 1.1 percent of its cumulative $11.3 billion in profits.” Even making this insane amount of money and paying barely any taxes on it, you still penny pinch to scrape every dollar you can no matter what the cost. How can you destroy the environment purely because of your greed, with no regard to the consequences of your actions? These measures have not gone unnoticed and I urge you to fix the sewage treatment systems of your ships and convert to a more environmentally friendly fuel.
