Protect Small Island States from Rising Sea Levels

Target: President Barack Obama

Goal: Support clean energy in the United States to protect small island states from rising sea levels

While news outlets have covered the dangers of rising sea levels regarding the mainland, small island states have been largely ignored. Small island states (Sids) face a greater threat from rising sea levels, as the populace needs to be evacuated to the mainland and the biodiversity of the land will be completely lost if the ocean swallows up these islands. Global warming is not the fault of Sids, but rather from large countries such as the United States and China. Urge President Obama to support clean energy, such as solar power, to keep Sids above sea level and out of harm’s way.

There are fifty-two small island states in the world, and each island is unique. Some have not been modernized, and others such as Singapore and Papua New Guinea have multi-billion dollar economies, a vibrant cultural diversity, beautiful coral reefs, and a plethora of different animals. But all Sids face the same danger, and that is rising sea levels. According to scientists, if global temperatures continue to rise by 4 degree Celsius, sea levels could rise by one meter every year, and by 2100, many Sids such as Kiribati, Maldives, and the Marshall Islands will become uninhabited. These people, and hopefully the animals, will have to be evacuated.

Large countries such as the United States and China are at fault for climate change, and their actions are negatively affecting Sids. Sids only make less than 1 percent of the global emissions in the world, and yet they will be the first to experience rising sea levels. Immediate action needs to be taken to save these islands from being engulfed by the oceans. Urge President Obama to support clean energy such as wind and solar power to lower the United States’ emissions and keep small island states above sea level.

Dear President Barack Obama,

News outlets have focused on the dangers of rising sea levels regarding the mainland, but very little has been done for small island states. Sids face the biggest threat from rising sea levels because they will be affected first and will experience more damage than the mainland. These islands are known for both their cultural and environmental diversity, and all of that will be lost if these lands are engulfed by the oceans.

I urge you to support clean and renewable energy in the United States. This means abandoning coal and nuclear power plants to relying on solar and wind power. For the good of our environment and the creatures that depend on it, please make make this transition immediately.
