Target: Kumi Naidoo, Greenpeace International Executive Director
Goal: Support Greenpeace’s efforts to reach zero deforestation by 2020
Without forests, our planet could not sustain life. Unfortunately, ancient forests all over the world are shrinking at a steady and alarming rate. We must take immediate action to protect those that remain in order to ensure our own survival and the continuation of all life on Earth.
The world’s forests are home to about two thirds of all biodiversity on land. They shelter entire ecosystems and many of the planet’s most endangered species. Millions of people depend on them for sustenance. Additionally, forests produce oxygen, help regulate the climate by balancing carbon in the atmosphere, and act as natural filtration systems, ensuring a consistent supply of fresh water.
Industrialization, however, is consuming these precious lands and allowing no time for regeneration. Deforestation happens in many ways, including fires, clear-cutting large areas for agriculture and ranching, city development, and unsustainable logging for timber. Every year, about 50,000 square miles of forest are destroyed (approximately 36 football fields per minute). The rate of disappearance is staggering and dangerously fast – stopping this practice is of urgent importance.
Deforestation is a critical issue, and we must act quickly to end it. Greenpeace is currently working on a campaign to reach zero deforestation by 2020. Sign the petition below to show support for this urgency. Stand with Greenpeace in their quest to save the world’s remaining forests and protect the future of life on Earth.
Dear Kumi Naidoo, Greenpeace International Executive Director,
Forests are essential to the health of our environment and the survival of life on Earth. They support vast biodiversity, shelter many of the world’s endangered species, provide sustenance to all humans, support our supply of fresh water, and help regulate the climate.
All over the world, ancient forests are shrinking at an alarming rate. It is unacceptable that 50,000 square miles of forest are lost every year. I agree with Greenpeace that this cannot continue, and I am pleased to learn of your current campaign to end deforestation by 2020. I am writing to support this goal and to applaud the action you are taking to preserve one of the most vital components of our environment. Thank you for your tireless advocacy and continued dedication to protecting the future of planet Earth.
